So you have thrown your hat over the wall, said your Goodbyes and closed the door behind you. You packed your bags and shipped your boxes with all your treasured memories and memorabilia, favorite clothes and accessories and things you thought you could not live without. Yes, Change is good and life takes a little boldness and nerve. You triumphed over doubts and fears and find yourself a new home and live with it for a while. As you start exploring and adapting to your new surroundings, you listen to your heart, your sensitivities and your bottomless doubts, because……. Somewhere in between The sweltering heat and rainy wet season The relentless dust and muddy roads Somewhere in between The hard knocks and the peaceful joys The tender traps of homesickness and the friendly people and smiles Somewhere in between The bugs and mosquitoes and the lush green jungles The yearning for familiar foods and the bounty of exotic fruits, juices and greens Somewhere in between The strange tropical diseases and the discoveries of gentle healing of plants and ancient Maya wisdom The disheartened emails home and the excitement of making new friends The endless search for things we took for granted and the contentment of doing with less The frustrations of tardiness, “island time” and the carefree feeling of a slower paced life Perspective comes…… Perspective come when poles are far enough apart, so yes, somewhere in between you will find a whole new You living outside the box with different priorities and you deal with it and take it in stride with humor and laughter. You feel more enriched by your experiences. You start to see life in a different light…the bugs and creepy crawlies become harmless, your body starts adapting to the heat and 72 degrees will feel cold enough to warrant a jacket and boots. Yes, you will still miss cherries and blackberries, but oh the pleasures of discovering dragon fruit and plantain chips! Your friends will come to visit and you will be Oh so proud to introduce them to Belize with all its magic, smiling people, its jungles and adventures and rich Maya history. As the famous quote from Helen Keller states: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces towards change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable” So somewhere between the overwhelming frustrations and a newfound serenity The heartaches of culture shock and serendipity….. Serendipity? Serendipity is when you find something better than what you were looking for; you were looking for a new dress and you found a whole new outfit. In this case you were looking for a new home in an affordable country with a simpler way of life and in country where you would not have to learn a new language and you found BELIZE
