Expat Healthcare & Health Insurance in Porlamar, Venezuela

Expat Exchange member, sandrroy, who lives in Venezuela shares her experiences with expat health insurance and medical services in Porlamar.

I don't know about others but I have not enrolled in any health care systems. There are both public hospitals as well as private clinics. Right now the quality is LOW at best! Hospitals are understaffed and supplies one would expect in a 1st world hospital are nonexistent here..

Expat Healthcare Advice for Porlamar

do NOT come here at this time!!! Basic medicines are no longer available!!

Emergency Medical Care in Porlamar

Salamanca is a military hospital on Margarita which supposedly has more supplies for their patients but I have only been there as an out patient for dizziness and I was given a saline solution IV drip and I was told to come back with a stool sample which was normal.. I had no more dizziness so I didn't go back.. There are several clinics where I have been treated in the past but not within the past 2 years (since things have gotten substantially worse in all medical treatment.) There are many ambulance companies as well as fire and police assistance.. Personally I would call the fire dept if I needed an ambulance.

Quality of Healthcare in Surrounding Area

People are dying because they cannot get to specialists who've left the country looking for a better life. I would not go back to the US because the costs are too high, so I will probably die here.

Prescription Medicines

Many prescriptions for common ailments are no longer available, antibiotics for certain types of infections are no longer available. Meds for B.P., heart problems , chronic pain, heart or lung issues, might be found but at a price the locals couldn't afford. I have a neighbor who did the leg work for me and found pills to fight a staph infection that might have cost me my leg. unfortunately the doctor who treated me left the country to live in Italy. Since then I had bronchitis and the meds are no longer available for adults only children.! and there are no nebulizers/vaporizers or asthma sprays to help with breathing or shortness of breath.
