" I need some hard data on actual monthly costs to live in DR, such as rent, electric, water, cable, food, etc. I realize rent can vary, but the other costs should be fairly stable. Especially interested in hearing from current retirees/expats who actually live in DR and pay these bills (vs. having an all inclusive ""vacation"" rental that pays for everything). If any kind person(s) could list a typical monthly budget, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! "

Buenos dias. I'm an ex-pat Canadian living here for the past 7 years. Rentals depend on location and of course size.. If you want to be beside the beach;- bigger bucks! Outside tourist areas and big cities, an all concrete (hurricane-proof) house approx. 1500 sq.ft. can be had for as little as $250. to $300.US. This will not be a luxury villa but a modest bungalow of a successful working class Dominican, ceramic floor and concrete roof. Electricity is the most expensive in the western hemisphere, with daily blackouts necessitating a backup system of a gas generator or invertor with deep cycle batteries. Monthly bill, about $75.US. Bigger house, bigger bill. Most houses of this class should have a cisterna of several thousand gallons with a pump so that water outages are of no concern. Cable if available is $12.US/month. Food is comparable to US if eating the same type of foods with local produce. 1st grade ground beef: $1.50/lb, 24ox. box of imported Frosted Flakes about $5.50. So eat local.
