I am a senior looking for a place to live that is warm, quiet and with in my means. I would like to be close to a market, in a small house in a small village, but I hear the medical facilities are not the best here is that true? I will be in need of meds every month and a doc once in a while. Is the medical as go as say Costa Rica?

a lot of the health insurance companies have a cut off age of 65. humana and universal are two with that
restriction. i'll get back to you with a good forum that will answer you questions almost immediately. my memory sucks so I must look for the forum name

I sent you a message a few minutes ago and was looking for another expat forum for you. the name is" expatblog.com". once there you can select Dominican republic or lots of countries. you only need to scroll down the page to find a country. they are in groups. you will probably get an answer from the " planer " she's the one that started the blog. and probably will hear from " bob k " to welcome you. I can already tell you that the north coast will be cheaper and less noise if you stay out of cities. Puerto plata is the largest city and you want to bypass it all together

oh, I forgot to tell you to plan your flight to Puerto plata instead of santo domingo which is on the other side of the island and a 6 or 7 hour bus ride although it is very cheap, $20 or less if the info I have is correct. but if you do land in santo domingo you will need to stay overnight and everything just adds to you cost. santo domingo is a very busy city which will be confusing to get around since you are new, so is Puerto plata also. but if you go there first you only have one place to get lost in instead of two, there are 3 towns that you should look into. sosua, cabaret and las terrenas. bob k lives in sosua, cabaret being the most expensive. lots of luck

yes it's the crs man again. if you have a real tight budget you can rent furnished apartments for $200/mo in Santiago ( a city in the mountains ) or other small towns. what ever you do no matter how good it sounds, don't rent till you see it. all kinds of things may happen, too much noise, too dangerous of an area. and ask questions like, is there hot water, don't take yes for an answer, check the water in every outlet, check all valves, is electric supplied 24/7, is the elec included in the rent. elec is very expensive. you probably won't need a a/c on the coast, lots of breeze. which may be a problem with other rentals, is it between buildings. well the crs man will probably remember other things later. oh, if we ever meet you can introduce me as the " crs man "

crs man again. told you I'd be back again. don't have anything of value exposed. take off that wedding band, earrings, watch, etc. it's a poor country with thieves everywhere. keep your pocket book out of sight. take some out some money but hide it and don't have only one wad, separate it some how. I know I have scarred you, just take precautions and you won't get robbed. but if you do, don't worry about it, they don't want to hurt you, just take your money. and don['t be a hero, give it to them. and don't even think about calling a policeman, they're useless. of course if I rob you, you know who I am. that's the first thing a policeman will ask. do you know him, do you have a picture of him in the act. i'm tired now, need my beauty sleep, i'm a few years behind already.

Come to Luperon. Located on north coast west of Puerto Plata. Small close knit gringo community. Low cost of living. Good health care available. Ask for Lynn.

hi artena, just happened to remember more info for you about the taxi and taxi's. an example: me and my landlord who has lived in DR for 10 years or so went to a taxi stand where they had a printed price list for many destinations, ours would have been $17 by the list. that was obviously a gringo list. my landlord speaks fairly good Spanish and bargained to $5 for both of us and that was for less than 5 miles. my driver charges me $25 to get from the airport the my landlords place. I thought that was a little high but my landlord says it was a very good price. I may have gotten that price because the driver knows me from his driving me and someone he drives a lot. some taxi's by the way will pickup other passengers along the way and don't be surprised to see 7 people in a 4( 5 packed ) seater. but these taxi's are very cheap. you can also bargain with them to pay for the whole taxi so he will not pickup other passengers. everything is negotiable. I know there will be other people besides you artena that read this, so for them so they don't waste their time and ours. yes they know a man who charges $8 an hour which is very reasonable, but that's not in Puerto plata Dominican republic

hi artena, I have craft and crs. I went back to your original question to see what you were asking for. the reason is because a man from luperon left a message about that area. it is a small town but very remote. don't know any thing about dr's there or markets. there is a restaurant at the marina that has very good food which is closer to what you are accustomed to eating. where as the village which probably only has food that the locals would eat which may be ok too the village it self is maybe a half mile from the marina. the main thing I want to tell you though is it's quite a trip to get to a hospital I am assuming. I'll just tell you about getting to the town. if you are coming from say Puerto plata area, you take a bus for maybe an hour( half hour for sure) to a town on the main hwy where you must get a taxi to luperon, maybe half hour. I made the trip which is not expensive. bus ride is very cheap and the taxi waits till it is full so the price is not expensive. all in all, your are at least an hour from the hospital in Puerto plata and I doubt very much that there is a ambulance in the area. but probably someone in the area would take you to the hospital for an emergency, but that depends, if late a night can you wake them. of course that applies to any where you are. might have a better chance near the city. don't remember if I mentioned rent. it will be cheaper the further you get out of town, but the cheaper you get you'll start to lose things like hot water, if that's a must for you. secutity is a must, bars on every window and outside door, at least on the windows. your better off spending a little more to get the things you are accustomed to. rent prices vary, you know the old saying, there are 3 things to consider, location, location, location. there's a little town about an hour from Puerto plata by the name of souse where you can rent for in the range of $400/mo, they have a market, bank, and a nice beach. I haven't been there but have been speaking to a gringo who lives there and I will check it out in dec this year. there's a scotia bank in carbarte, short bus ride, also one in Puerto plata. I bring up that bank because if you have an account with bank of America for one, there are no charges and they give you a fair rate for the exchange. go to another atm and you'll pay $3 for use of the atm and won't get a fair exchange rate. total cost you can count on about $5 min. it's the same no matter how much you take out, so it's always, take out what you need for the month or even more if you have a safe place to keep it. gotta go
