I recently went to DR and fell in love with the country and a special someone. I am a Canadian citizen. I work as a Corporate Administrative Assistant in a Hospital. I am looking for advice on where to look for work, how to become a citizen and also, I have a four year old who I would like to enroll in school. Please provide any advice you have. Much appreciated.

Hi! I'm going to approach you as I have others with over 15 years of experience down here. As much as you don't want to here this you need to take off the rose colored and "HE loves me glasses". Ne does not. Direct and simple but for your own good. Stay home and after awhile you will get "I need a little money for ??". He has others sending him money too.

But lets try to help in the off chance that he IS ok.
1. What part of the D.R.?
2. What is your expertise in the med. profession.
3. Are you fluent in Spanish including medical terms?
4. Can you live on 1/4 what you make now and have no benefits?
5. Do you have another source of income?
6. Do you have an escape plan in case you have to leave like............ now?
7. Can you afford, not my business but? , private schools and security for your young daughter. (Your BF promising that is NOT an option.)

With sincere understanding and this same question comes up all the time with the same ........... nasty ending over and over.

Have a long distance relationship for a year or more and see how it develops.

Good Luck. Sereno

I read this and though YOU may not be the more mature person, it has some good information. I also will ask that YOU ask HIM:

1. Does he have a bank account? How much?
2. Does he have a passport?
3. Is he able to get a Visa to Canada on his own?

If he fails any of the above... then you fail too.

Young lady, to be honest with you, I got burnt out reading your post. Please for God's sake listen to the advise from Sereno and stay home. Your child deserves better.

I have to agree with Soreno. Your infatuation with the DR is understandable, but the sacrifices you are purposing will have a huge impact on your life. Which is fine for you, maybe, but not your child. Take it slow with this special someone - let him do the pursuing and prove himself to you in the ways Soreno has suggested. Good luck!

Where in DR are you planning to live? DR is not the same everywhere, for example, if you 've been to a tourist area, then you know very little about DR, just like whoever goes to IBIZA, knows absolutely nothing about Spain, same applies to Las Vegas, for USA.
That being said, are you aware Canada is ranked in the top five countries in order of best quality of life? Canada is in third! DR is not even ranked in best anything. You might have renounce to some things, like for example, a decent wage, so most Expats start their own businesses. Renounce to everything you are used to take for granted from the government administration. Still, I know many Canadians that say they would never leave DR. If you want to get your residency, you need to obtain a residence visa at your nearest Dominican Consulate in Canada. After you get your residency visa we can assist you the through the process.
Good Luck

Hi. I just joined this forum a couple of days ago. I am relocating to DR for a job possibly this summer.I am an American born Dominican/Puerto Rican. Please BEWARE! I will tell you that not only have I been a "victim"of a Dominican man's charms, but I have heard countless stories of the same through other support groups. Dominicans lie very well. It is part of who they are. They will use any means possible and know exactly what to say in order to obtain a free ride out of the country. They will also always have an "issue" that comes up to ask for money. I promise you that if his intentions are truly honest, he won't mind a long distance relationship, nor will he ask you for anything.

But, to my sister, who waited 4 years to bring her Dominican husband over (to be sure) was later revealed that he had fathered 2 children and had numerous affairs during that time.

It has been the very rare occurrence that foreigners have found true love with Dominicans that wasn't initially based on personal interest. Especially if there is a child involved...there is even more cause to be careful.

I know you feel like you are in love, and you just might be, but please accept the probability that he is just playing you.

On the other hand, you are an adult and if its what you truly want...I wish you the best of luck.

I f you want to move I would advice you to go by yourself , let the kid stays in Canada... I am haitian american I can tell you how haitian men and dominican men are liars I am a man also but I have to tell the true ... be careful who you meet in these countries , try to know the person first ,or try to get him in Canada instead of moving there for him. Another thing do not expect same salary as I do I am moving there to open my business try to do that if you want to move, but don't let the man be the boss

Are you kidding me??? You are NOT better to get this man to Canada.

Move here and make sure this is what you want before taking on this type of responsibility!!!

I am from another latinamerican country and canadian as 2nd citizenship. I have lived in DR for almost 10 years. I am a senior person and my best advice for you is: for your own devlopment and for your kid´s future, STAY IN CANADA. If you need sun and beaches get them anywhere else and give the best to yourself and your kid. Do not get infatuated with the maremaids´chants from DR
