Coming To Sousa

I am planning to spend 6 months in the DR starting 11/1/14. I have secured an apartment in Sousa (Trade Winds). I have vacationed in Puerto Plata many times but never longer than 30 days. My question is do I need to apply for a Visa? I would prefer not. Also will I be taxed on personal items that I may bring or have shipped and what is the best and cheapest way to ship? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

You won't need a special visa but when you leave you will pay an overstay fine of less then 2,000RD.

As for bringing stuff with you the best way not to pay duty or tax is to bring it with you.

Shipping means you will pay tax and duty on it! And it will not be cheap. So may not be worth it! What kinds of things are you thinking to ship?
