Good morning My husband and I are planning to move to Sousa from Canada next year. My husband would be receiving a pension. We are trying to find out whether this would be taxed by DR as well as Canada. Have not been able to find out as yet. Also wondering if there are work from home online jobs for myself available or would it be best to line something up from Canada before moving? Any advise you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Dee Dee

I don't know anyone who pays income tax on their foreign pensions, but I don't know if that's legal. It is nearly impossible to find good paying work online or otherwise here. If you can arrange for an online job before arriving it would be the best way and if you know of something that can be done online from here, there would be people including myself interested in such work. You can pm me for my lawyers number if you wish to know a good one in regards to your taxes.

Thanks I will let you know if I can find something from here that can be done in DR. We are planning to buy a house so we will not have a mortgage to deal with. is the cost of living comparable with Canada? We are trying to work if the income we would have coming would be enough.

I would strongly recommend you start with renting to see if in fact you like the area you are in. I live in Costambar , my website is www.costambar.org has plenty of information about this community in case you would like to consider it. Restaurants tend to be very reasonable, food in grocery stores is priced similar to Canada. Rentals and real estate are way less then Canada or anywhere else in the Caribbean. Best of luck,
Mike

We are from Canada also and while we don't live here full time yet, we are here in Sosua for five months a year. If you do find any online employment, I too would be interested. How do you plan on handling your banking? This is one hurtle we haven't sorted out. We have a Scotia Bank account and are able to use the ATM here but as you know, they can be out of service for days.......hope your move goes smoothly....How long have you been coming here?. Cheers, Lisa

Hi I will let you know if I find something with the online job situation. We have not looked into the banking yet as we would not be moving until summer 2016. We are with Scotia bank as well, but I did find an article this morning about HSBC being global, having your account set up before you even arrive. Easy access for expats. How do you like living in Sousa.

Thanks for keeping me I'm mind. We like Sosua. We are retired so we don't go for the nightlife. But there is a good clinic here, two good grocery stores and most people have bEen very helpful. There is a fair bit of prostituition and I imagine the night life can be a bit risqué. The traffic is a nightmare. No rhyme nor reason and very fast. I don't know if you've driven here, but it's an experience. We have met a few people that have been here for ten plus years, fairly affluent, and none of them use the local banking system. They have all tried it but got tired of being nicked and dimed to death. I will look into the HSBC a, it maybe the answer. Now we have direct deposit in CA and just access funds via Atm....there is one machine in Sosua and the closest office is down the road in Cabarete. This week we are going to Luperon to have a look around....more rural, slower pace and lots of sailing, our first love.

Hi, you should try renting first and figure out if you really want to invest long term. I can recommend the complex where I bought my place they are really nice people and offer financing. check them out! Also, i am also interested in the online job if you do find out. This is my email if you want the information. mariposahope1@yahoo.com
