I don't know!

I've never tried it or asked. I've always paid in D.P. carefully counted out... twice.

I saw a trusted cashier palm a 500 once so I count it twice for her.

But my best advise is use your CC or Debit cards at a minimum.

we only use or CC in tourist areas, but paying bills i didnt know what would be easier paying with US cash or converting to pesos.

i guess we will have to get a checking account down there just to pay bills.

I believe you would need a Dominican bank credit card, not always easy for a foreigner to get as they think you are a flight risk. On the other hand, using most US credit cards subjects you to a 3% foreign transaction fee. I pay my utilities in cash (pesos) at the local office. This can also be done through your DR bank or Vivimeca agency. That's how I pay my Claro cell phone bill, right at the local pharmacy/Western Union branch. One common way of paying bills here in the DR is to make a deposit into the personal or corporate bank account of the person or company you are paying. They need to give you their bank account number and you have to go to a branch of that bank. If you have an online account at Banco de Reservas, you can do this online. Probably with other large banks too, such as Popular and HBSC. Hope this is helpful.
