I'm a 23 year old American girl wanting to live in DR for several weeks, possibly several months. I'm looking for an area with walking distance to the beach as well as a small walk to markets/restaurants. I also want to be close to hiking and other beautiful nature. I also would like an area that has English speaking people and a somewhat touristy vibe while still being filled with peace and beauty. I looked into Puerto plata but am still unsure what would suit me best. Any ideas??

If you check out www.costambar.org , you can find out all the details of this beautiful gated community just outside of the city of Puerto Plata. I'm sure it will be just what you want.

Hi,

Come to Sosua. There is a gated community called Casa Linda that offers short and long-term rents. The english speaking community inside the project and in Sosua in general is quite strong. Although Casa Linda is not on the beach it has a free shuttle that takes you to the beach, to the supermarket, and to Cabarete. There is a zip line nearby, right in the middle of nature, and you can take guaguas (buses), motoconchos (motorcycles) and cheap taxis like the locals to get around.

Las Terrenas probably has all you're looking for. But, if you're coming in Jan.-Feb., its a bit difficult to find any longer term rentals for a reasonable amount. Cabarete is nice too, and has a good number of kite surfing enthusiasts who are closer to your age.

I briefly looked into the weather and all months looked pretty nice temperature wise, some months rainier than others. is jan/feb the busiest time for tourism? when do you recommend visiting for a long term stay?

I appreciate the comments so far. has been a lot of help already :)

The busiest months are generally from mid December to March. And Easter holidays... It gets crazy here. I think the best deals can be found between second half of April to July. Here in LT May is usually a bit rainy, although last year it was super dry.

Yes, January and February are pretty busy. Therefore, the rents will be more expensive. May-June is a nice period. It is not too hot yet and there are less people around.
Las Terrenas is beautiful with quite a few French and Italian expatriates. In Sosua, you will find Canadians and Americans, but also many Germans and Swiss people, and a few Russians.
I am less familiar with the Punta Cana area.

Another part of the Dominican Republic that is really stunning is the area around Barahona. It is not developed yet. Some parts look a little bit like the Mohave desert. You also have gorgeous beaches, lakes, flamingos... I like it very much.
