I am a Canadian living in an area called Costambar. It is located just outside of the city of Puerto Plata. It is a safe and beautiful gated beech community. You can see my website www.costambar.org for more information. There are only a few listings on the site, but I can show you just about anything you may want. Please feel free to contact me regarding any questions you may have,

Mike

Hi Mike

Thank you for replying. Do you know about other areas that may be a bit more affordable? But still secure?

"Just about anything you what" should be a red flag.

I am not sure what your budget is, but a one bedroom apartment can be rented here for around $350 monthly. If your thinking less then that you can look at a place like DR suncamp, but in the end the price will end up similar. There are very basic places in the town of Puerto Plata that I know for a bit less as well, but at the end of the day nothing is free. PM me with your budget and I can get you something for less, but remember less means less.

Hi, go to the Century 21 website. They have a very large inventory that goes from very expensive villas to very cheap apartments. Good luck!

Hi, my name is Lance and I l there live in Cabrera on the North Shore away from all the Tourist traps but close enough if you want to go ,there a number of good Real Estates covering the North Shore, I used Sebastian Rodriguez from DR costal Properties, they are the oldest R>E> Agency in the area and have a lot of listings. You can go on line to:DRCOSTALPROPERTIESVIRTUALTOUR.COM AND TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THEY HAVE TO OFFER. Hope this helps, take care and God Bless..F.Y.I>, Sebastian lived in CAlifornia for many years and speaks both Spanish and English. and is an Honest Christian Man.

I wouldn't just move and buy even if you've been here before. I would rent first, rents are negotiable here, then you can explore/look around. It's been my experience anything over 6 months is considered long term plus with the world economy prices should start "correcting".
I'm in the Sousa/Cabereta area

Mostly people trying to steer you to buy in there area and have something to sell.

Every area has it's good points and not so good. But then that changes depending on the individual point of view.

Asking on a website becomes just about worthless.

Come down, investigate, move around, learn and find what YOU want instead of a forum telling you.

6 months renting before buying is right.

I agree with Sereno on this topic. I've been here for 4 years. As a North American who've lived not far from the Canadian border; the culture shock of becoming a resident in DR takes some time to wear off, before making any big financial commitment in this country. I came back and forth as a tourist 15 times before moving here. I used several modes of transit to see different sections such as Santiago, the north coast, Bavaro, Constanza, LaVega, Santo Domingo, etc. I rented several apt/houses for 6 months at a time. It takes at least 6 months in each location to get a realistic opinion of that area. Good Luck.

Hi ! Myself and my wife (American) are moving down to Cofresi , right outside Puerto Plata. Our neighbor is selling his villa for a "steal" @ $325K American. 180 degree water views and 180 degree mountain views. Private enclave of villas near Lifestyles Resort and Ocean World. Be well,
Les

I hope that all goes well for you.

I do appreciate a good joke.... as in your handle.

Some private type areas have been in litigation for years. I don't remember the American company that FORCED many owners out by turning off elec., water and threatened the owners until they all left loosing everything. I think that several of those in that company pulled the same thing elsewhere and are now in prison. The properties were then taken over by "someone else" and the original owners never got a dime.

Buyer beware here is a whole level way up higher. Learn the laws, take your time and get a good agent and Lawyer.

Hi. I've just joined and hope to provide information that may be helpful. I moved from England seven years ago because when i Asked an air hostess where she would retire to having travelled the world. She replied as follows; The Caribbean, North coast of the Dominican Republic (i didnt know there was such an island) . When asked why she said that it has a large English speaking community, lowest cost of living and property prices in the Caribbean, miles of sandy beaches to explore, stunningly beautiful countryside with mountain range and rolling green hills to the coast. Then what caused us to sell everything, put possessions into store , book a two week all inclusive holiday to Playa Dorada was THE FRIENDLIEST PEOPLE IN THE CARIBBEAN that I have found to be the case. We stayed bought a two bedroom villa for $110,000 and instead of writing more scripts and stories i ended up working for a major real estate company and working 12 hour days in the constant sunshine. If I can be of help let me know. I will create a site and start inputting all the information I've gathered over the years that my hundreds of clients have asked me about before coming over

I also was told to rent first and it can take two years to acclimatize yourself. However, after renting in las Canas apt hotel for four months a realtor strolled by and asked if we had a spare 15 mins as he was seeing a villa next door. Having nothing better to do we did see it, and placed a dposit on it the following morning as we both looked at each other when we walked thru the front door and said YES. Been there over 6 years still no swimming pool, no a/c , no back up tinaco but easterly breeze and ceiling fans to keep us cool. Now a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker for 6 yeras.

I love Jarabacoa. After years here I wish that I had bought/built there.

How many acres and does it have river/stream running thru it?

You forgot to mention that crime wave up there. I know the area very well.

Another real estate agent. At least you are up front about it.
