Wow, you are flying into the wrong airport. Sosua is on the other side of the country.
From Punta Cana you take the express bus to Santo Domingo to parque Enriquillo, about 2 hours and US 8 I think. Then you take a taxi from there to Caribe Bus terminal, about US 6 or 7. Bus from Santo Domingo to Sosua about 4 1/2 hours, just under US 10.
Motel room in Punta Cana - good luck. What time do you arrive in Punta Cana?

This is what I send to my Coldwell Banker client rGo by Bavarro Express coach to Santo Domingo which I think leaves around 10am and one in the afternoon. It takes 4 hours but the seats are reclining and you can watch a Spanish video, usually a comedy. Take a shawl and sweater as air conditioning at 18degrees can feel cold. Get off at the last stop and pick up a taxi that should be at the terminus or just round the corner. We paid 250 pesos to take us to Metro bus station that run less often than Caribe Tours but the terminus is next door to a three storey plaza that you can walk around and if necessary have a meal on the top floor. If you want to leave quicker go to Caribe Tours bus station. It takes four hours to Sosua with two stops on the way for coffee break. I usually fall asleep most of the way. Cost should be around $10 to Santo Domingo and the same to Sosua from Santo Domingo. There is a taxi service directly opposite the Caribe tours terminus in Sosua which is about half a mile from the town center; pay no more than 300 pesos. . Metro station is dead center in town and you can walk to most locations or take a taxi which is 25 yards from the Metro terminus which is next to a petrol station. Our office is very close by.
The taxi office tel no is 809 571 3819 . The taxi driver I use often is Jose who speaks English is 829 901 8211. Just say you were recommended by Peter & Joy. (I Don't get commission)

Is there really any advantage flying into Punta Cana over Poerta Plata? Other than cost with Spirit?

No,,,,,,, No,,,,,,, No! If you're not planning to stay in Punta Cana, fly directly to P Plata. Not knowing where you're going in this country could become your worst nightmare. Taking the bus from Bavaro (Punta Cana) to Santo Domingo, then a taxi to Caribe Tours Bus Terminal, catching a bus to Sosua is quite a simple task for someone whom has lived here for a year or so. Not so much if you're new. I'd taken the Caribe Tours bus with my wife from Jarabacoa to Santo Domingo, then a taxi to the Bavaro Bus Terminal off of Ave. Maximo Gomez for 300 pesos. The terminal is a small store of 20'x 35'. You should go online to Bavaro bus tickets and reserve your tickets a week before arriving if you're flying to Punta Cana. Same thing applies to Caribetours.com if not you'll be stranded. It just makes common sense to just fly into P Plata.

My wife and I will be driving to Punta Cana from Santo Domingo in 2 weeks, there are several small hotels. Try Hotel Flamboyan. It's located 10 minutes from the airport, in the section of Punta Cana named Bavaro. The cost is USD$45-50.00 a night with breakfast include. The address is Calle Italia #1, Bavaro. Tel. 809-552-0372 they speak enough English to understand you. Go online to Expedia and search for hotels in punta cana/bavaro. Make your reservation. No need to pay up front, your credit/debit card will hold the room as you will receive a conformation number once you book online. They will accept credit/debit/dollars/pesos as payment at the hotel. 7 days before you leave your country, visit your bank, get $1,000.00 changed into Dominican pesos. $1,000.00 is about 45,000 pesos. Break the amount into, ten, one thousand pesos bills, forty, five hundred pesos bills, One hundred, hundred pesos bills, and one hundred, fifty pesos bills. Do this in advance for your security. Also have about 3 USD$10.00 bills on you, because once you get off the plane, before going through customs, you must pay $10.00 for a tourist card. After you pay, take your receipts to customs, they will take one; the other you keep with your passport. When exiting after getting your bags, Look for taxi's that have taxi identification in the window and painted on the taxi. Before the driver moves the car, ask him, "quanto tarriffa senor ?" It should cost you no more than 1,000 pesos. A Dominican would have to pay 500 pesos. The hotel is about 8 klm from the airport. It is a daily common occurance in DR that no one has change when you try to purchase something. Stand there and demand your change. The word for change is "cambio". Never flash cash, separate it in privacy of your room. ATM is available, but can also be a point of danger for you, as a new comer until you learn where to go. Good luck.
