Please be aware of the dangers of living in the Dominican republic. it is very dangerous, and every one is on the take whether a doctor, lawyer, judge or some one living on the streets. they all are waiting for an oportunity to take advantage of or down out rob you.

I am sorry, but I do not agree with your opinion of the Dominican Republic. I have been living here for over 6 years. Although It is true that you have to be careful whom you trust, there are plenty of nice people here. Sometimes, it is the foreigners that you have to be most wary of. Certain precautions have to be taken: for instance, living outside of a gated community has its risks. A person doing that should ensure that he /she hires a private security person who can be trusted. Before ordering a job or hiring a taxi, always ask for the price in advance. Check your attorney's reputation before you do business with him/her,... Do not rely on a single recommendation, ask several people.

well great but I think your reply supports my claims. yes there are good people everywhere you go in the world but here 99 out of 100 are on the take. it also depends on how active you are in the community. if secluded in a gated community you will not run into the dangers of someone living within the community actively.

Well, I do not spend my whole time and my whole life in my gated community. I also go out and have plenty of interactions with the community - I like to see my friends, both expatriates and Dominicans. I see that my neighbors also go out. Some have jobs here. Others have children who go to school. Everybody lives normally as they would in the States or in Europe. By the way, we do live as we would in a US gated community.
May I ask how long you have been here and why do you have such a negative view of the country?

I have been here for 4 years. I do not want to sound totally negative. I also have a few very good friends. I just do not want to give a new comer the impression that all is great here and it is not. I enjoy my life as it is and am fortunate enough to retire here but the reality of it is, it is dangerous here both in business, on the streets and dealing with every day life. you did reflect this in your first response and I think you have accepted the way of life here as I did and enjoy my retirement but again lets not give the new comers a false impression. if they are aware of the situation here and are willing to accept that then they will probably enjoy life here,. I learned to laugh it off.

Almost 13 years here, you must take precautions but really is that different then Vancouver, New York, Miami, Seattle, Toronto, London etc etc etc.
Any place can be dangerous the issue here is thinking the friendliness is anything other then that! Do not trust here until you have reason to trust.....

you are so right. again, it is the teaching/culture here to pursue the tourist/foreigners. not to mention the total disrespect if your a foreigner. it is also very dangerous for the Dominicans. in the last month 2 motor cycles have been taken at gun point, /cycle jacked if you will, one tourist robbed and a Dominican killed by a machete. that is the crimes I know of.
in my postings is again not to give a new comer the false idea of life in the Caribbean like a rosy picture. they need to know the truth so they do not get hurt.

There are dangers everywhere, no matter where you live.
You have to learn as a newcomer what to do, what not to do and do NOT trust anyone! Unless they give you a reason to trust them, then you wait!
Live simply, don't flash valuables, be careful who you invite in your house and take the appropriate precautions!
