Hello, My partner Phil and I will be visiting DR in a few weeks and are considering moving there permanently. I have been following the blogs and reading up on all of the different locations and have narrowed my search to Cabrera, Luperon, and either Piantina or Naco neighborhoods in Santo Domingo for renatls. I think it would be best to rent for the first year to give us more time to explore the country and find our perfect spot. However, I have discovered there are some places that do not have electricity. Is this a problem country wide of in isolated places? Any heads up rental agencies I can contact? Any assistance would be very helpful! Lynn & Phil

Lynn, I agree with your thinking about renting for the first year living here and driving around the country until you find a place where you both will feel comfortable. That's what I am doing and my place is Cabrera. Let me give you a name of a friend, Sebastian, he has a Real estate company here and has listings all over the North Coast. His company name is: DR Coastal Properties.com, go check out his web site and look at the tour section at different locations and places to see. Hope you find your place in Paradise,Take care and God Bless.

You may want to look at www.costambar.org . There are no power or crime problems here and the rents are very reasonable.

Thank you for your response! I'll look up the website and possibly use the realtor as well!

First I will say what a difference in potential locations!
Santo Domingo - Piantini and Naco are very big city, lots of traffic and noise, but lots of shopping, restaurants and nightlife!
Cabrera is quiet as far as I know - I've never lived there. Its a little removed as well.
Luperon is very nice but like Cabrera a little isolated and quiet. Its a boaters paradise though.
I have lived in Puerto Plata, Sosua Santo Doming La Romana and Costambar.
Let me tell you each has its pros and cons. I have visited almost this whole country and again pros and cons.
Do not let ANYONE tell you any area has no crime or power issues. THEY ALL DO but to greater or lesser extents. It also matters how you live and how you conduct yourself.
In 13 years here I have only recently had any issues with crime. I chose the wrong neighborhood, was broken into and quickly rectified the situation by moving.
Good idea to rent for a while and check things out!

Hi planner. I have always respected what you have said in this forum. I believe you may have misunderstood an earlier post from me today regarding Costambar. Of course there is no crime free area anywhere in the world, but overall its quite low here. In regards to electricity I cannot remember the last time it went out. Unless its a brutal month it shouldn't be more then twice and often even those are a few hours at best. Cheers, Mike!

Thanks Mike. I had a senior moment there - I realized after I posted the name of your location was in the URL you posted. Sorry about thta. Phil and I are retired and will be living quietly if possible. We live in the boonies now and would prefer a similar location when we move.

If quiet is the goal then take Piantini and Naco off the list. Anything but quiet, it is in the heart of the business and shopping district of Santo Domingo. Rush hour in that area almost lasts all day!
