Hi All, my work is based off the Internet, so having reliable access is an issue. Any advice?
Also 50s female with a 35 pound lab/terrier mix breed, fantastic dog.
As well I run daily. So safety is also an issue. Thanks

Hi there are three main internet providers in the Sosua area Claro, Orange and De Lancer. I use de lancer and have used a Orange Mifi that I could use when moving around the area. Also, when the electricity goes down as I dont have back up batteries.

You will find a lot of dog walkers and runners in the Sosua cabarete area so you will soon make friends. I haven't read your previous messages so not sure where you areplanning to live

Thanks for the welcome info Sosuapeter. I am looking to relocate October 2017, maybe April 2017, so just info gathering at this point. Where I live will be dependent on safety first and foremost, for both myself as well as my four legged companion. I am a distance runner and so having miles of safety is paramount. I know that all places have crime and some areas in all cities and countries are safer than others. I am looking to spend six months and if I like it then taking the steps to make it permanent.

My wife and I work via internet also. Claro has become rather unreliable so ADDED DeLancer also with an automatic switching box we ordered from the U.S. One goes down the other kicks in. If you don't want the box then when you go down, just plug in the other. I'm sure that other areas that don't have those providers will have similar options.

You will have to figure out if the area you will be in in safe to jog and I would imagine that you will not have anything of value on you other the some water. Being alert of what's going on around you is very important and know when to move to the other side of the street or change direction.

Your options are completely dependent on the area you will live in, sometimes right down to the neighborhood in the larger cities.

Tell us where you plan to relocate to and maybe we can help.

Safety when running - really depends on the area you live in. In some cases absolutely NOT safe because of traffic in other cases you should have no issues.

Some basic rules apply - don't carry expensive phone or money, Dont run the same route. Don't leave your house empty the same time every day etc etc.

Great advice, again, thank you. Little things, I do run with earrings in, I am thinking that would not be wise.

If you work through the Internet you know that panic of when it goes does down.

Thanks, running as a single female requires extra precautions wherever I run. There are creeps and crazies and people who simply do not like runners. I run with a 37 pound lab terrier cross, and only a water bottle. Great thoughts on an empty house. I never run at the same time of day, but I do run at similar times, again, sometimes a refresher on safety is a good thing

Thanks, Lance, My plan is to gather as much info as I can and then plan a trip around Xmas, or early spring to do some onsite investigation

Please go online and check out Cabrera, crime here is very low and the locals are warm and friendly, so do yourself a favor and add it to your list of things to check out in the DR.

If you decide on. Sosua Cabarete consider renting in Blue Fish that is equidistant between above two popular holiday resorts. Reason being that it is in a large gated community with many lanes to run safely as well as, m,iles of beach you can run along both on the beach and tracks alongside but your dog will be stopping a lot to enjoy the smells. This lady rents out apartments there orquidea@amberguardian.com

Don't run on the high way simply because the drivers are crazy at times and rarely see anyone walking or jogging so they come too close at times (I walk everywhere)

Thank you, such great suggestions. My list has started and I will certainly be checking out Blue Fish and the running trails and beach. I am sure Rex will enjoy all the new smells. He does know the difference between a walk and a run though :) Also I have heard of screwworm maybe being an issue in the DR, is it? What other health concerns do I need to be aware of for my four legged companion?

Yearly vaccinations are the same. Tick and flee treatments about the same. Some skin irritations may occur but should be easily controlled.

A poison kit is recommended to be on hand just in case someone uses rat poison on your dog or your dog finds some planted meat with it.

We just lost one dog due to this and treating our other 3 plus horses. The tick disease is ehrlichiosis. The recommended treatment is doxycycline given orally twice a day for 30 days. I don't think there is a vaccine for it, at least not suggested by our vet. Blood test is quick and on the spot. You might look it up and learn some of the symptoms and understand that a dog can have this virus for months before symptoms are seen and usually it's too late.

Cain toads are also poisonous so look those up too. I've only seen 2 in/near my place in about 20 years but I'm not in there desired habitat.

Sorry if this sounds like a lot to worry about but you sound like you would rather know upfront.

Update on the tick virus. Our 3 dogs have finished the 30 treatment and have more energy and happier dogs. Makes us happier too.

My wife was talking with a friend in Boston and about the virus; how slowly it works and difficult to see changes until it is to late. Her friend looked it up, talked with her vet and had the dog tested. Her dog had the virus and is being treated.

So this Tick virus, as named above?, is not just in the D.R. or Caribbean. It was just found in Boston by a friend. What are the odds of that?

Thanks for the update and glad that your pups are well and happy and full of energy. It is certainly an issue I plan to bring up with my vet in November. I have my pup on tick medication during the tick season, so he has been clean and tick free since I adopted him.
