Visiting DR for retirement possibilities, Looking for Advice

Greetings to all!
My husband and I will be visiting Puerto Plata in November to research possible retirement locations. I've done some research, however, would greatly appreciate any tips, pointers, recommendations as we are first time visitors and flying blind!
Below are a few of my questions - but I welcome any advice with open arms!
1. We fly into and out of Punta Cana -- I'm thinking the easiest / most affordable option is to rent a car and drive to Puerto Plata. This would also allow for ease of access to other areas. That said, I must admit I'm a little nervous about driving after reading numerous "horror stories" regarding driving in the DR. I welcome any suggestions regarding car rental/driving/best way to get from Punta Cana to Puerto Plata etc..

2. We are looking for low key, beaches, warm community atmosphere to retire in. Any suggestions for other locations to research while we are in the DR.

3. Any got-to-do's, can't miss activities we should plan for.

Thanks in advance!
Mary

I would suggest you take the Metro bus. Driving on your first visit will be very dangerous! I live in Costambar which is a wonderful gated beech community just outside of the city of Puerto Plata. For information on retiring there look at www.costambar.org . Cheers, Mike.

Hi Morriscollins, I read your request for informatiom, First, you said you are flying in to Punta Cana and heading, you may not know it is about a 6 to 7 hour drive north. First you expresses about driving an option you might want to consider is> Caribe Express , they run an Air Condiction buses all over the Island and to to Budget Car Rental and pick up your car in Puerta Plata or pay more for your tickets and fly into Puerta Plata. In helping you find a location to settle in you could go online and check out, a site called DRExcape.com, they offer free tours to different cities so watch their videosyou will find out a lot about cities along the North Coast I, myself live in Cabrere ,a small city with good schools and a very low crime rate.I hope this may help you in your trip to thr DR< God Bless

Hi ,

My wife and I are from NY and bought a villa in Alto de Cofresi (edge of Puerto Plata). We looked at 32 homes from POP, to Punta Cana , to Samana , to Santiago. Bear in mind the island is huge. 6 hours fro Punta Cana to POP. Many Brit's , Dutch , Germans and Americans on the North coast. South coast (ie. Punta Cana ) letter land, tourists , big casinos, glitzy hotels....just what we wanted to avoid coming from NYC. You will find what you seek in Costambar , Cofresi , Cabarette , Cabrera or Las Terranas. Slower pace , lovely beaches , mountains , great eateries , warm people. Difficult driving is overrated. Moto conchos ( motorcycle taxis) whatever and out crazily , but stay in your lane and be focused. A great GPS app (WAZE) works great down there while driving. It is a poor country and people try to take advantage of gringos , just be street-smart and learn the ropes. We love it !

Be well,
Les
