Hi! I was just reading some on-line news and I was surprised in how many foreigners was killed in 2016 in areas of the North Coast. For example one Italian guy lost his life* in LT in September, a couple in Cabrera in May , and more others.* To me it appears that these people lost their life for little money.... and this is really sad. I know that in DR there is a huge problem with the poverty. Many people suggest to keep a low profile when visiting or living in DR, what is your opinion on this?* What do you think you guys expat there? There is an increasing of criminality? Do you feel safe or unsafe living there? Thanks everybody.

Hi,

I do not feel that there is more crime on the North Coast. It seems to me that it is better than a few years back. I have lived here for about 6 years.

In my opinion, it is always imperative to keep a low profile and be aware wherever you go. It is even more necessary in the Caribbean.

Also, I would never ever live outside of a gated community in the Dominican Republic. It would be calling for problems.

I hope this helps.

This topic has been posted on another sight with lots of input both real and not. As for the person that asks for details and confirmation it is easy to find with very little effort. As an expat in the D.R. for almost or over 20 years, I watch, read, talk with others and try to understand the crime problems. Years of interaction with locals and expats. Some not even born when I moved here. The changes in culture and frustrations are sometimes obvious but most are not. Those that are not have lead to more aggressive behavior.

I'll try to address this topic from a POV of 20 years in the D.R. at a later time.

I was waiting until things calmed down to give15 a better prospective. Things have NOT calmed down. But let me go back some time.

15 20 years ago crime was simple opportunity. No aggression and saying "no Thank You" was respected. Keep in mind that as Cable TV, internet and cell phones became a part of the culture..... the culture changed and it changed big time with an access provided due to cable and internet. A country with that only had local roof top antennas was changed overnight. A whole new culture emerged.

As I write this... we are on are 4th attempted wall breach in order to due us harm tonight. 4th in 4 weeks.

Over the years we have had some attempts to enter our property with dogs killed. We have always repelled and kept our place safe. We have buried our dogs with honor.

Our main problem now comes from a "secure" place the other side of our wall with 4 times trying to enter from A SECURE PROJECT and they don't care. We have used guns to defend but not to kill. Our NEW security are the police in one of our apts. on the property and .... screw the warning shots.

Is it safe here. Only If you know how to be safe.

Hi
There is crime and I sense it is increasing but it's not stopping me walking everywhere, except late at night. The Dominicans are still the friendliest people in the Caribbean and if you ever take a journey in a gua gua(public transport) you will hear the laughter and occasionally the singing as they a popular tune is played on the radio. I had a client who was also concerned about crime so I sent him some statistics downloaded from the internet and asked if he would move to this town. "No way" he replied. I then added the town which is where he was living. in the States. The problem over here is that we have a large community of ex pats who meet up each day over coffee and drinks and sadly we humans now have a habit of looking for and talking about negative things. Thus, if someone had something stolen it is know about within hours and discussed then everyone chips in about other criminal experiences. To the point where it feels as if crime is on every corner, which it isn't.
I agree with the previous comment about living in a gated community as it gives you a sense of security,. I don't, nor do I have dogs, only 25+ cats that would lick any intruder. I've been here 7 years and have no plans to move away as there is far more to living here, including healthier lifestyle, fresh air, constant sun shine, and lots of international and Dominican friends. Its worth humming the song "Always look on the bright side of life" as the universe will present positive aspects of life.

Thank you for your post. I am Puerto Rican living in CT, married to a Kiskeyano. We are moving to the Higuey region next summer with our kids. We have visited and stayed in the DR multiple times over the past 3 years. We know you have to be careful, especially in urban areas.. Let's be real...i live in a sleepy resort town, where crime is almost non existent. If i drive 20 miles west into New Haven, where I work as a visiting nurse, there are neighbirhood and even buildings where I keep my pepper spray at the ready.
The entire country is not a crime haven. Be smart, research, be friendly to the locals and not condescending like some of the posters who most complain about the country are. If you walk around in fear or show disdain for the locals, then more likely they won't be there when you need them, and we all need good neighbors. You catch more flies with honey...

@ Sereno...... I'm so sorry for the loss of your dogs; I have two gate keepers. Your response to this post is on point. I don't think people whom had bad experiences in DR are being condencending when they share on this topic; I'm more in the camp of those adjusting to culture shock. I've discovered over the last 4 years of being here that, the more certain you are about where you're going when leaving your residence, the safer you'll be.
