I will be moving to the North Coast in about a year. Ive been to Cabrera and liked it a lot, but its seems a little too "sleepy" to me. The Sosua area seems less sleepy. Is that the case? Also is there a fairly large expat community? I'm a hairdresser and plan on doing hair. Is there a need for an expat hairdresser?

Hi
Yes, Sosua is definitely less sleepy in fact many tourists come here for the night life. There is a large International community which is why I moved here from England seven years ago, as I only speak English. With regards hairdressers. Dominican women do like visiting hairdressers which is why there are many Dominican hairdressers but only a few Expat hairdressers so you could be successful if you build up a reputation just like any business worldwide. We had a hairdressers for sale a few months ago cost around $15,000 but there are vacant premises that you could rent.

Yes there is a need for hairdressers. Expats (me included) are always looking for a good stylist.

We dont need more wash and blow out type services, those are a dime a dozen here, and very very inexpensive. You cannot compete in that area.

You will be needed for styles, good cuts, colors etc for hair that is less tolerant of chemicals!

Sosua/ Cabarete area is full of expats as is the Puerto Plata area. Puerto Plata has a lot more people to draw from but is not everyone's cup of tea so to speak.

Sosua could use a good hair person for expat women and MEN. 2 others did very well but somehow they messed up their own business and left after several other expats, wife and self included, got fed up and found others though not in Sosua.

Rents should be reasonable and you could have your shop in your home with appointment only. Our hair person in Caberete is good and she charges ... but we get what we want and like so no problem.
