I am soon moving to Haiti for an extended period working with a non-profit based in the U.S.
In keeping my own money separate from the monthly support coming into the organization from the U.S., what is the best (and cheapest) way to receive funds from the U.S.? Bank transfers or money wiring services like WesternUnion?
And if bank to bank transfer, how difficult is it for an American to get a local bank account? What bank would you recommend? And what information will they require of me to open the account?

money transfers like western union take the biggest cuts. my advice is go Banque National de la Republique d'Haiti or uni bank most of them have a ATM use your debit card and check with your bank back home to make sure you will be able to do this. if your debit is a visa or master card you should be fine and after you get your transfer pay for what you can in american but it is best to change your money to Haitian. find a respected money changer. if you are in cap haitien haiti send me a message i know the best money changers who take the smallest cuts.

i know some bank managers in cap haitien they could make it easy for you to get an account if yo uneed contacts but it is fine to keep your bank account abroad as well its just a pain in the ass taking cuts in transfer/atm/exchange fees.
