Most Important Household Items to Take to Haiti

I am hoping to move to Haiti next year. I will not move all my household goods, but am wondering what small household items would be good to take. For those who live there, what items do you wish you had brought with you? Thanks for any advice!

Many items that are made abroad will cost you double in Haiti or in some cases triple. Bring a truck or car and fill it with as much as you can because the shipping companies charge you by size not weight. i would bring a TV, video game systems, dvds, games, mattress/bed and bedding, pillows, radio, flashlight, batteries, tools, computer/hardware/software if you own a gun i would bring that as well.

@dave6, thank you! I had not planned to take my car because of the bad roads there, but now I see it will make a great moving container. Maybe I can sell it and get an ATV once I get there. Thanks again!

It would be wise to take your car. if it is not a 4 wheel drive truck and you plan on being in the rural areas then it will be hard to get around so it could be a good idea to sell it and then take the money and buy a 4 wheel drive truck but a car can serve you in the city like PAP or okap. but yes it will make a great container this is what many people do they will go to the USA buy a truck or car fill it with items and goods then take the care keep it or sell it and sell most of the goods they brought with them.

Just passing this along: I have now been advised by people inside Haiti that shipping a car is not a good idea because 1. Haiti customs will charge a minimum of 20% of the "Haitian Blue Book" value (maybe more) and 2. your car can sit for months while customs fiddles with the paperwork. Some people are flying into the DR, buying a used vehicle there, putting it in the name of a trusted Haitian friend, and driving it into Haiti.

ship it through okap and get a connection with the port authoritytry to contact the laroche family and see if they will help you . Haiti is corrupt and you will face harassment at every turn and people doing all they can to separate you from what ever amount of money you have even if it is very little.
Yes DR is a better choice but do not come to Haiti and expect people to be honest and kind though you will find many honest kind people but be ready to fight for every little thing you want and or have.
regardless you are going to pay more for everything like auto mobiles on the Island but DR things like cars and even some food items even mattresses can be found much cheaper than Haiti
