My husband, daughter and I looking into moving to Martinique for one year. Are there any restrictions on American citizens moving there for that length of time? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Yes , there is a little particularity. The Martinique is not in the Schengen space...So you need to ask a particular visa at the embassy of France for the Martinique...

True, Martinique is fully integrated part of the EU but it is not within the Schengen zone. American citizens do not need a visa for tourism. However, for work or extended stay a visa is required (but could be avoided by leaving a few times for shopping to San Juan). There are no embassies in Fort de France (since Martinique is not a country); there is also no American consulate on the island. If you need a visa you should apply at (any) French consulate in the States. It might be possible to get a visa at the bureau d'etranger in Fort de France but this institution is a nightmare. Please feel free to contact me (I am dual US and German citizen partly living in Martinique).

I am really interested in living in Martinique for a year. What would you suggest as my pathway to get the correct visa. Also, should I decide to stay in Martinique for more than a year, what are the requirements.
