Assalaamu alaikum / hi!

My husband and I are planning to move to Algiers in the near future insha'Allah and I'm just trying to find some info on activities for young children that may be available - do mother and baby groups exist over there? are there any libraries for children? etc etc.
I've visited many times before and love it there but have never really considered this sort of thing.
Any help very gratefully received!

Assalamu Alikum
My Wife and I moved their last year for 5 months from England
then unfortunately came back as we found it difficult and with kids it is double the trouble.
in Algiers I hear there are some but I am not sure we were based in the west, if you would like more information please just ask and I will be happy to answer, rboukhiar@hotmail.com

Wa alaikum salam,

The best activity for children in the summer (and even early spring and late fall) is the beach. We usually avoid the midday sun (by going just in the morning or late afternoon, or taking them somewhere to eat lunch, if we stay all day), but the kids never get bored of this.

Other activites for children in Algiers include: The Bouchaoui Forest (playgrounds, nature, horseback riding), the newly renovated children's library at the National Library (Hamma) (they have French and Arabic books and activities for children), the children's activity center at the Jardin d'Essai (right next door to the Hamma library) (they have classes for children and the center has a petting zoo, aquariums, informative movies, books, computer instruction, etc), The Jardin d'Essai is really something to see for the whole family, and there is a zoo inside the garden which makes it even more fun for the kids.

Your local "Maison des Jeunes" is also a good option for activities for children (activities vary depending on where you live).

Short overnight trips out of the city are also fun and educational. If you get a list of the Youth Hostels in Algeria ("Auberges de Jeunesse") you can travel all over the country with the children and it is not at all expensive. A particularly good one is the one next to the Djamila Roman Ruins not far from Setif.

In the summer, Hopeland's MAA in Draria has an authentic Montessori preschool for young children (ages 3 to 6, 2 by permission). Feel free to contact us for more information: academy@hopelanddz.com. The Facebook page has pictures of the classroom and the garden: Hopeland's Madrasat Ardh al Amal. Hopeland's website has more information about the school: http://www.hopelanddz.com/

Hope that helps!
