Hi, I know nothing about Algeria and the current situation. Do expats feel safe in Algers? Is there much trouble? The UKFO advice indicates expats may be targets for kidnapping and sporadic uprisings are common.

Am interested in peopl´s view on the ground as there is a potential job opportunity.

Thanks!

If you choose to go don't take your family if you have one! My ex husband worked there and his company placed myself and our children in France due to safety issues and deadly health conditions. Make sure the company is offering to place you in a heavily guarded compound that flies food in from other countries as well as flies you in and out. The money is great but not sure the risk are worth it. My personal opinion. Good luck.

My husband is from Algeria. I have visited once for about two months. I mainly stayed in and around the neighborhood but did go downtown and up the coast. I tried to look like a local including wearing a head scarf. I dI'd not have any problems but I didn't live there and it wasn't apparent that I was from the USA. I ate all the local food but drank bottled water. I didn't get sick. Being peanut butter with you. My husband's family loved it.

HI I am British and have lived in Algeria for the last 5 years in the Capital. It depends where you will be located. From my experience I must say that I have never felt unsafe and I go about daily with my children. As to uprising again in the last 5 years I have only experienced a mini one which was because the price of some basic foods were increased, this was very short lived as they reverted them back within days. But like I said it really depends where your located. If you want any more info let me know.

Hello !!
I have to agree about the area criteria. It depends where you're going to work and live.
There is no food issues I am aware of, and depending where you are bottled water is preferable indeed.
If you're going to live in the South part, better not bring your family with you, unless you locate them in Algiers, the capital or one of the main seashores cities.
Good luck,
M.

Hello,

You should not worry about securti. thousands of foreigners are living and doing business here.

You only have to choose the right place to stay in.

I have lived as a foreign woman close to Algiers for 10 years and never had a problem. I work, go out alone and don't wear a head scarf. The locals are very friendly and protective. The food is fresh but just like anywhere you pick the best places that look clean to eat in when you go out. I do drink bottled water, but who doesn't these days anywhere in the world? You will be fine. There are places in any city that are not safe to live and walk around in....use your same judgement like you were home.
