Hi. Here's a good concise overview on the background to the conflict from the red24 website. Hope this helps.
Angolas conflict history dates back to 1961 when the first anti-colonial revolts took place. A new government in Portugal and the granting of independence to Portugals African colonies in 1974 was followed by a triangular struggle in Angola for power. The MPLA, UNITA, and one other movement fought each other for control of the country.
Optimists hoped that the emergence of democratic movements in Eastern Europe, the threatening collapse of the Soviet bloc, and South Africa's willingness to let go its hold over Namibia might bring peace to Angola. South African and Cuban troops withdrew between 1989 and 1991, and in May 1991 UNITA and the Angolan government signed the Bicesse peace accords. And although elections were held in 1992, they fell apart and fighting was renewed with vigour. There have been short periods of relative peace since then but the death of rebel leader, Savimbi, is the first chance there has been for peace.
