Pete,
Car rentals in Argentina are expensive and tricky.
I suggest the following:
1. Make sure you understand the deductible, many rental companies have US$1,500 - US$3,000 deductibles. For a few dollars more you can have a zero deductible.
2. When you are given possession of the car look at it in daylight, not some dark subterranean parking spot and inspect every square inch including the splash pan under both front and back bumpers. Also, spend extra time inspecting the windows especially the windshield, look for any "star" fracture or crack no matter if miniscule. Make the person delivering the car make notation of every ding, dent , etc. And don't take his/her word for the spare tire, look at it and make sure it is filled with air and that the rim is not dented on the underside. Yes, I have been screwed in more ways than I can count by the most innocent looking rental employee that when you bring the car back looks at every nook and cranny with a microscope.
