To give a useful answer it would be helpful to know what your experience of Argentine/Buenos Aires is so far and what is your idea of a reasonable commute. For instance if you want to keep out of the city centre and the ex-pat ghettoes of Recoleta, Palermo and San Telmo then Villa del Parque and thereabouts within CABA is worth a look. If you want to get outside CABA San Isidro and Olivos and the area generally known as Barrio Norte are worth consideration. If you want to get even further away, Pilar and Tigre are moderately popular as commuting locations but you are looking at an hour or more at least by road into the centre - depending on traffic conditions - and longer by train.
The biggest step towards economic living would be legal long-term legitimacy since residents with access to a garantor can obtain reasonably priced long-term rentals but short-term expensive rentals are all that is legally available to anyone else.
Access to real folding-money US dollars will open a lot of doors for short-term renters but be aware that extrordinarily tight exchange controls make obtaining dollars from within the country particularly difficult. Once again legitimate long-termers win.
