Hi all,
I am moving from London to Buenos Aires in 2 months. I have been using flipkey to find an apartment. I am looking for a central, safe and artistic area if possible. so far I have been offered a good deal in a place called Abasto, a block from the big shopping mall. it all looks good. can anyone advise if this is a suitable neighborhood for a 3 month stay? I am a single 35 yr old male, love eating out, theatre, coffee, and just walking around the city....

Hi Tommy,
It is not a very good area. Try to get accommodation in San Telmo, Palermo, Belgrano or in upper Barraccas.
Hope the information helps.
Kind regards Nelieta

I suggest the Palermos where the youth and artistic are going or San Telmo where the Argentine culture oozes from the air. My wife and I stayed there for three months and loved it.

Hi Tommy,
There are a lot of squatters in the area and it is not safe at night. Yes the shopping centre is there as well as the Carlos Gardel Street. The streets are littered. Like I mentioned before, Palermo, San Telmo and Recoletta are more expensive but it is safer with a better vibe.
Also I must add that it also depends on the person. Maybe you will like it there.
Kind regards Nelieta

Hi all, thank you for the replies, they were very direct and helpful. I have held out and not booked anything just yet. luckily I have a friend in work who is Argentinian and is putting the word out with his friends and family in BA. so hopeful to get a recommendation there. (they had similar advice to you re Abasto...). it really is all about talking to those in the know ahead of such a venture. if anyone has any other little bits of info please let me know! in the meantime I will see what comes up this week and may return here for more advice.. thanks once again.

Hi. I lived in Abasto for a year and loved it! I lived on a lovely cobbled street called Zelaya and never had any problems with crime, even when coming home late at night/early in the morning. It's well situated regarding transport and there are restaurants, cafes, bars and theatres all in walking distance. It is a cultural area being the home of Carlos Gardel and there are lots of artistic/theatrical events going on. I admit I lived there in 2010-2011 so things may have changed....Good luck with your search!

Argentina has changed a lot since you have last been here. This area is now not a good place to live.
