Apartment to rent in Tucuman

Post New Topic

I would like to rent a furnished apartment in San Miguel de Tucuman for 2 or 3 months, April to June 2015.
Does anyone know of anywhere and the likely costs?
My girlfriend lives in Tucuman but it is not possible to stay with her yet ( family issues) so I will rent.I have been once to Tucuman for 2 weeks last month and will return for a month at the end of September.I will/have been, staying in hotels.
I am retired, from England, she works as an English teacher.

jimbob66,

I am a bit confused, why doesn't your "girlfriend" find you a suitable place?

She knows the area, speaks the language and would definitely strike a better "Rent" deal than you even could because Argentine Landlords do discriminate and charge gringos more.

During my 5 years in Argentina if I needed a place to rent, and I did, I would have my Argentine friends make suggestions and then call the Landlords and inquire "how much is the rent"? This way when I showed up the Landlord didn't hike the rent. Caveat, but the Landlord might ask for an Argentine Guarantor on the Lease or that you pay all of the rent up front.

Both her and her friends can help with this but she is having some difficult things to cope with at the moment so I thought I'd do some research myself. I will be in Tucuman for a month from 21/9 so was hoping to get a better idea then.I will have plenty of time during that month to look around. Thanks for the tips.

I'd endorse what TomP has said about getting Argentine friends involved in renting an apartment if that is what you want to do. There are so many pitfalls the visitor can fall into.

Last time I was in Tucuman I stayed at Hotel Iguazu at Catamarca 563 adjacent to the railway station and opposite Plaza Alberdi. It's an old, run-down colonial style building with all the rooms opening out on the central courtyard. The rooms are very basic but very cheap and very clean with very hot showers and the family who ran the business were warm-hearted and very helpful. I mention it - not just to reveal my penchant for cheap hotels - but because it looked to me at the time as if several of the rooms were occupied by long-stay guests and I figure you could do worse than consider if it might meet your needs. If you rent an apartment and it turns out to be a disaster, you are stuck with it until your contract ends and the problems may not end there but you can move out of a hotel room any time if you find somewhere better.

Incidentally, how do you plan to get to and from Tucuman? If you have the time and inclination, the train from Buenos Aires passes through some remarkable scenery on its way to Tucuman. When Paul Theroux made the journey chronicled in The Old Patagonian Express I think it was called La Estrella Del Norte and it wouldn't surprise me if it's the same rolling stock and even the same staff on the train today. Check out the Ferrocentral and sateliteferroviario websites and -yes- those prices really are in Argentine pesos. The journey takes twice as long as the bus but it is about half the price.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought about that angle re a hotel. I was thinking that I might be able to find a landlord, or to be more precise, her friends could find one, who was prepared to rent for 2 or 3 months rather than long term. Maybe a rethink is needed.
As for travel to Tucuman.....plane!!!! I'm not a great solo traveller!
All of this is at an early stage the plan being that I will stay a few months at a time in Tucuman and she will come to England for shorter periods. At some point her domestic situation will be sorted and she wants to move to England and that's when the next set of immigration problems starts. Thanks again.

Okay, well, I guess we can't all like trains and buses and cheap hotels.

I think I know what you mean about immigration problems. In my opinion it is only a matter of time before someone brings a case against HMG at the ECHR over the draconian measures now in force - if Britain is still in the EU then, of course.

In the meantime, it is worth noting that the vast majority of Argentines are descended from Europeans and that some countries, notably Italy but I think also Ireland and maybe some others, are willing to grant citizenship to Argentines whose ancestry doesn't go too far back. Having a European passport is a game changer and if your girlfriend is in a position to apply, I'd strongly suggest she look into this if she wants to be able to live in the UK

Thanks once more for the advice.
Unfortunately she has no Italian connections so it will be at the mercy of the UK bureaucrats. I was looking at asserting a treaty right under EU law ( my right as an EU citizen to have a family member come to the UK to live with me) and that seemed to be above UK law. I've tried a few lawyers to get an outline but they are interested only in fees. I know each case is individual, but there are surely guiding principles.
I should point out that the definition of a family member in EU law extends to partners.
On the question of trips.....on my next visit we are going to Salta, 4 hours on a nice coach, and a decent hotel I think! Last time it was a 2 hour journey to Taffi del Valle, a nice , peaceful place but the poverty en route was a real eye-opener.

Torild,

I receive many requests for more information about San Rafael and for "affordable" accommodations.

What may be affordable to one is not for another. What monthly price range are you looking for and that will tell me what to suggest.

Regarding information about San Rafael, just Google it and you will be able to learn a lot more than my pontificating.

Once you know the basics I will be happy to suggest more specific questions.

Sincerely,

Tom Phelan
