I am doing research on the cost of living in Argentina and according to this website
http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Argentina
It's pretty high. Higher than cost of living in the US.
From those of you who live in Argentina. Is that list accurate? $10 for a cheap meal? and $500 for rent for s single person?
If I move to Argentina, I would be moving to a small beach town. Please give me your comments about cost of living in Argentina.

There appears to be the standard bank rate of living in Argentina where the Peso trades 8 to 1, and then there is the street rate of living in Argentina where the US dollar can trade 15 to 1, that is almost double. So a $500 cost can really be $275 or less and $10 might be $5 or $6. So it depends on what prices we are talking about.

If I get money out of my ATM I would get the bad rate right? Is there anyway to get US dollars from ATM and exchange it with the street rate?

If you get money out of the ATM in Argentina, it is going to be Pesos and the bad rate. The only way that I know to get the good rate is to have US dollar cash and trade it on the street..........There are companies that will meet you in the privacy of your home or wherever you are staying. Counting and verifying stacks of cash is a very odd thing to be doing on the side streets.

The ATM in Argentina only dispenses AR pesos and at the current "official" rate of about AR 8.5 to 1 US Dollar.
The key is to bring US dollars with you, up to US$10,000 if you can. If you choose to live in Argentina a protracted period, e.g. 90 days+ factor in returning home to the USA and bringing back more US dollars.
If US$10,000 converted at, say AR 14 pesos to 1 US, you indeed will be paying around US$275 for that $500 rental. Note however, many landlords, especially when dealing with a gringo, will quote rent is US$ dollars. If so you can try and persuade the landlord to take AR pesos at AR 8.5. to 1 US dollar but many landlord's will insist of Ben Franklins or raise the rent to reflect AR 14 pesos per dollar..

I agree, selling US currency of the street can be dangerous and also you might get bogus (counterfeit) AR 100 peso bills.
There are plenty of Cambios that will give you an honest rate.

The only Cambios that I have personally used are in Mendoza or San Rafael.
If you ask the right people you should have no trouble finding an honest Cambio.

You are beginning to sound like an AFIP stooge. They appear on other groups from time to time. Nobody is going to give up their trusted source of exchange to somebody they don't know.

Good point. We all know how hard AFIP is digging to come up with reasons to tax people.

No worries mate. I will find some good Cambios, and if they want some promotion, I will have their names and numbers available by PM if anyone else needs them. I have seen some good ones advertised with e-mail addresses that will come and pay a visit if I like. Maybe we should meet at a bank or some place public...........Thanks

I definitely would not invite a stranger, including a Cambio person, to visit where I was staying. Good way to get robbed.

So TomP, are you in Mendoza? Gonnna spend a bunch of days in downtown Buenos Aires, then off to Iguazu Falls, then into Mendoza. Should be in Mendoza for a week or so around Jan 6th or so. My wife and I and another couple from Boquete Panama, travelling around South America to see if the grass is greener over there. If you want to get together for a coffee and a chat, that would be great. Cheers. Jim in Panama

Jim,
Love to meet you but I won't be in Argentina until harvest time, March and April.
If you are in BA for New Year's eve and day check with the ex-pat club and see if there is anything special going on you might enjoy.
