Can anyone recommend a good Bank in Uruguay that works or has Branches with a US Bank? I plan on transferring my money (monthly) to a bank in Uruguay and then bringing the US dollars back into Argentina to exchange on their official black market. Any advise or better suggestions? Thank you for sharing!

Can somebody walk me through a scenario, say you bring US$1,000 to Argentina and get the "Unofficial" rate versus using a Bank in Uruguay where you must convert the $1,000 to Uruguay pesos and bring them to Argentina to convert into USDollars.

Hi Tom... you mean versus converting them to Argentinian Pesos, correct? When you take U.S. Dollars to Argentina, you can change it on the Black market at a better rate then if you were to take it to the banks or exchange offices. I have never personally done this, but from what I have read on the Posts. I'm sure that PanamaJack can give you a more detailed account of how exactly this transpires! Thank you PanamaJack for all your help and feedback!

What I would do is bring $1000 US currency to Argentina and see how many pesos that buys for you. Last week I got 13.5 to one dollar on the black market. I would rather have a bank account in Uruguay. Deposit your 13500 pesos in a Uruguayan bank and see what value they give you in Uruguayan pesos. Then take another $1000 US dollars in a Uruguayan bank and see it is the same or less or more. Or you can just ask that question.

Here is an idea. You can send dollars to a CITIZEN of Argentina....best via Ria Moneytransfer. From a U.S. bank account to Argentina for PICKUP....no banks. The money comes in dollars, costs about $5.00 to send $2000....yes $5.00 and takes about 6 days from order to pickup. Then change the dollars as you please.

The only problem is that once the money arrives in Argentina...you cannot retrieve the money in US dollars as the banks and financial institutions aren't allowed to hand out US dollars. That is what this whole debate is about and how to get US dollars into Argentina in order to exchange on the black market. If only it were that simple!

Moneygram and Western Union are available in Argentina as well, however they will most likely give you the bank rate on any US dollars sent and pay you in Pesos.

There are many Cambio offices outside of Argentina, in Chile and Uruguay that will accept and exchange Argentina Pesos and American dollars. You will not get much for your Argentine Pesos, but you will get something, and exchange it to a number of different currencies, depending on what country that you are going to. In Peru, we are now using Soles, 3 to 1 on the American dollar. If you want a nice beach community, we are loving Huanchako, near Trujillo, in Peru

I'm sorry i do not think i was clear enough. I'm looking to move to Argentina and but from what i understand, if I take my money through the bank i'll receive local exchange rate. That is what i'm trying to avoid. I would like to receive my $'s and exchange them at my will. I also wish to thank all for your responses.

A: first time go with $10k in cash. B: ge to know a good trading house, and arrange transfer via banks, to their account and then they will charge you a commission, and get you the pesos or the green bucks.

Have you considered using XOOM? They transfer money from your U.S. bank account to their BA office. You get your money in Pesos. The amount that they pay is close to the "blue" rate. Considered the fsct that you won't have to go to Colonia would be a dream come true.

I have used Xoom for smaller amounts of money e..g. a few hundred up to a few thousand dollars but Xoom's requirements are very strict and a lot of paperwork and you do not get the blue rate, perhaps a few pesos per dollar less.

I just left Huanchako Peru and it appears to be the surfing capital of South America. 100's of surfers out there at any one time. It is a real gem of a beach town. Found a place right on the beach, a 2 bedroom and 3 beds completely furnished and all utilities including internet for $500 monthly. Living room faces the ocean and it is above a restaurant.

Xoom is Citibank so you can't expect the blue dolar or black market rate but I have heard that you can get a better rate than from the National banks. Bring cash. No ripped or messed bills and 100's preferred, the new and blue ones. Declare with customs everything over $10,000. Tell them you are buying a car or a house to retire in. It is none of their business but they have to ask. Don't mention that the money will be used to help get the British out of the Falklands or anything political or drug related. They don't appreciate political or drug related humor at the border. Cheers
