First, you do not say where you are from in your message or profile. If you are from Australia, the USA or Canada, you will have to get an expensive visa beforehand for the Brazil side of Iguazu. This can be obtained on weekedays at the Brazilian counsulate at Puerto Iguazu over 24 hours. This is NOT the case for uruguay, where they will just give you a 90 day tourist visa.
Second, they will let you come and go the same day out of and into Argentina if they have no reason to belieive you are abusing the system to reside in Argentina. That is at the discretion of the Immigration official, and usually there are no problems.
Third, if you have overstayed your Argentine 90-day tourist visa, you will have to pay a fine before leaving the country at Immigration. This usually takes 1 to 2 hours (before checkin) at Ezezia airport, but for any other exit location you need to have gone to an Immigration office within 10 days, get the documentation started, take a slip to a crowded Banco de Nation and pay the 300 pesos fine, and go back to Immigration to get your approval stamped to leave within 10 days.

thanks very helpful I am us citizen so I won,t take the chance of a 1 hour turnaround in brazil. but, is it more of a risk to, say, try a 1hour turnaround in colonia or is it better just to stay overnite
thanks

Well, it depends on your entry history, but it should be no problem for an hour turn around if it is tyour first time after your initial stamp. However, if this is a "visa-run" you have done before because you have been in Argentina a fairly long time, then doing it the next day would be less of a risk, even if any risk is minimal. You decide. If you are going all the way to Colonia just to get another 90 days, why not spend the night there? You are being somewhat cagey about your actual situtation, so I suspect this is not just a question of a first-time coming-and-going. :)

ahh, okay, did not see your first message. I see you have done this before, so I would suggest overnight just to minimize the risk that you will get some Immigration officer in a bad mood.

I have gone from Argentina, where I was on a 90-Day Visa about ready to expire, to Monte Video and returned the same day without any problem.

Yes, many of us, myself included, have, and many more will. However, the rule does not always prove the exception. :)

whatever happens, report back to add to the mix of experience...you will most probably be okay on a same-day return.

Im afraid that Tom is correct. Brasil is very stringent on the visa fee! Extra income for them. They don't care how long you cross for. Money! Money! Money! Btw....I've been on the Brasil side and it's not as pretty as the Argentinian side! Come to think of it....I don't recall having to pay a fee when I crossed over. Hmmmm. Not sure anymore! Well I guess I was helpful!? Lol! Sorry!
