Rent amounts in Buenos Aires

Good Morning. I have been looking at rentals in Buenos Aires on Craig's List. The prices are very confusing; some are P700, others are P10,000. Would someone please explain these wild variations. We are considering a trip, perhaps for several months, but the confusion over prices may cause us to stay away. Also, if you have a better site for rentals than CL, please pass it along. Thank you.

dalepues,

Buenos Aires is no exception regarding cheap hovels for rent to quite attractive Condos or homes. At AR 700 pesos, that's US$73 and assuming it's a monthly rent, I dare guess what the property would look like and where it is located,

At AR 10,000 pesos per month (US$1,042) you should get a decent but not lavish rental in a decent location. You might find yourself being asked for US Dollars versus AR pesos but if it is in pesos and you bring US Dollars, you will enjoy a huge spread between the official rate of about AR 9.6 pesos equals 1 US Dollar and the Blue Rate about AR 15 pesos per 1 US Dollar. Of course with the new President Macri now officially in office, he might severely devaluate the AR pesos so be prepared for perhaps wild fluctuations.

I can recommend an Argentine Realtor that I have know for many years, just email me and ask.

Buenos Aires is a wonderful city so don't become too easily discouraged.

Hi Dalepues,
Please don't get discouraged, it is wonderful here & people here are very warm & sincere. It's not easy, everything is in Spanish and is different--for example, the ground floor is PB, then the next floor (piso) is 1 (which we would consider 2). When you see ads, be careful--they have a lot of rental apartments that are fully furnished with dishes, towels, etc even maid service, and these may be listed by the daily, weekly or monthly price. If the ad says Alquiler--for rent, Venta--for sale. If they list the rooms, they are counting the living room, so if it says 1 room, it's a studio, 2 rooms is a 1 bedroom. The most popular areas for tourists is Recoleta & Palermo, so they will be more expensive but still less than a hotel & you can save money by cooking some meals at home. I have heard it's not too safe in San Thelmo. Here are a few places to look--a lot of agents don't call back, and don't speak English. If you know someone who speaks Spanish it really helps.

monappartementabuenosaires.com
zonaprop.com.ar
enbuenosaires.com/apartments

You might consider just renting it for a couple of weeks to see if you like it--sometimes it looks exactly like the pictures, but is very noisy or has a bad view, etc. Then extend if you like it. Also, if you put it on a credit card, it will be charged on the USD. When you get here & exchange your USD for Pesos, see if you can pay in Pesos & you'll get a better deal because the exchange rate is good right now 14:1. Good luck, I hope this helps.
