moving the real costs

I live in argentina near cordoba. I moved here from the usa. I am going back to the usa and then returning here with all the things I stored there for over a year. A year ago when I came here I looked into shipping my belongings which include a chevy here, several companies mostly based in miami gave quotes. They were about 6500 dollars. The goods I have are worth more than that. Many of them cannot be replaced in argentina and those that can cost more here in argentina. One company from new york seemed to be inexpensive. they quoted only 2900 dollars but only can do to buenos aires. somehow if I use them I must get it the 760 kilometers furter myself or hire someone to do it. I fail to understand why this relative short trip should cost over 3,000 dollars more if I do the whole trip door to door from a miami company? Whose palms are being greased by the corruption? ANd is there a u-haul kind of company in argentina I can hire and do it myself? Having done u haul in the usa I know i am capable of doing the whole move myself lifting and loading my things. any suggestions someone might have would be welcome. dave

Whatever you do don't bring your goods through Buenos Aires, bring them in through Santiago, Chile. Having lived in Argentina for five years I never, ever heard one good report about bringing goods from the US through BA.

The only exception was an American friend of mine whose wife is .... yep, Argentine.

Hola I am married to an Argentinan woman so maybe my experieince will not be the hellish one many here describe. I also got my permanent residence application approved after 10 months it took a while so that should help too. But since I do not take anything for granted I am prepared when going back to the usa for visiting to stay at least a year since I hear that Argentines must be a minimum of one year away from Argentina to qualify for importing any of their goods into Argentina duty free. So if I cant get them in duty free and without ransoming them through aduana, maybe if I declare them to belong to my Argentine wife she can.

My argentine wife and I are working for a company here in Buenos Aires and dealing with shipping trucks all the time. Our advice to you to sell all you have in the US and buy things here all over again, Macri is opening the borders now, importing is becoming easier. Truckers are not reliable here, some steal, none of them give a damn about your belonging and so your stuff is very likely to arrive damaged, if not stolen, unless it is someone you know personally and can trust them to take care of the whole shipping procedure. There is no uhaul service here because vast majority of people aren't ready for it, they would break the truck, and then not pay more for exceeded kilometers, etc. best of luck.
