Visiting for first time

Hello,

We will be visiting in September and staying at an apartment in the Capital Federal District for 6 nights. ( We are staying in Montevideo for 8 nights)

We then plan on flying to Iguazu Falls for a 3 night stay.Returning back to BA for an additional 3 nites.

Questions:

How soon should we book our airfare to the falls?

How safe is the Capital District at night?

Suggestion for winery visits? Fly...rent a car? Train?

Walking/food tours?

Thank you all!

John & Susan

8 days in Monte Video seems like a lot to me but ...

If you really want to experience Argentina's wine country where 70% of its wine is made, then Mendoza Province is for you. But keep in mind Mendoza Province is several hundred miles long with 1,100 Wineries and there are few Vineyards/Bodegas in Mendoza City. If you are up to an all night drive you can take a luxury Bus from BA to Mendoza City or San Rafael (650 miles). Or, you can fly from BA to San Rafael or Mendoza.
I would try and squeeze 3 days in Mendoza Province not counting travel days. If you want a list of the Top Ten Bodegas to see in Mendoza Province let me know.

Just a reminder for ravel from and to Mendoza, the airport will be closed for resurfacing of the runway from Sept 7th thru Dec 7th so plan your trips accordingly. We are having to route our trip to San Rafael from Miami thru Santiago to San Juan or Cordoba and have a 6 or 12 hour bus ride to get to our finca in San Rafael. Bummer!!

Hi Tom.
Yes, our place is on Costa de Las Vias 8500 just off Zardini. We have 10 hectares in Bonarda and PX grapes. I wish we could support the finca on the grape sales but without having a wholesale operation and selling our wine overseas it is a loser most years. We only put up a barrel or two each year for our own use and sell the remaining grapes to either Bianchi or the coop.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. It never hurts to know what other vineyard Owners are doing and how they are being treated.

You mention making wine, is it strictly for personal consumption when you are in San Rafael or do you ever ship some to the US?

Can I ask, what did you get per kilo for your 2016 Bonarda grapes? We are getting killed with old stagnant prices of AR 3.8 p/k for Malbec and Cab and Syrah and then the Bodega waits until July to tell us what we will receive then issues a series of six post-dated checks. Wow, they must have learned the float from Walmart. We sell out Chardonnay grapes every year to Mumms but it's the same "Float".

Tom.
We make enough wine from our Bonarda (we also have a small 500 vine Malbec plot next to the house) that we blend with. We are allowed by US customs to import 23 bottles each trip into the US as the commercial limit starts at two cases or 24 bottles so we have two two wheeled coolers that hold the wine and is within the baggage allowance with LAN.

We have the same price you receive but the killer is the cosecha for which we got charges 1.4 pesos/kg this year, reducing our gross by almost 50%.

We will be coming down in November this year and will try to get together with you and share some wine!!

Mike,

Yes, the 2016 harvest costs for us was AR 1.2 p/k after our workers received another 30% Government mandated wage increase. In 2008 our workers received AR 1.400 pesos per month plus 23% additional in Government benefits. In 2008 we received AR 3.2 pesos p/k for Malbec grapes. In 2016 our workers received AR 9,000 pesos per month plus 23% additional in Government benefits. In 2015 we received AR 3.5 pesos p/k for Malbec grapes. We're still holding our breath about the 2016 grape prices that have been touted as 25% - 35% higher. I believe it when I see it.
