Sending dollars from Argentina to USA

Situation: Argentine national has cash in USD (less than $3000) and needs to get it to someone in the states. apparently Western Union is not an option due to Aregentine rules and taxes. Not sure what, but I know they've tried that option. What are the thoughts here? PayPal? Shoot over to Montevideo and send from there? Give $ to trusted non-argentine friend to send via western Union? Work with a friendly bank with US offices?

I hope you receive many good suggestions as I am always running into people with either AR pesos or US Ben Franklins that are in Argentina and want to send back money to the USA.

Hi, we have a US bank account. Where is he? Maybe a meeting and talk about what he needs.
Good luck

If you have a way to send US dollars from Argentina to the USA and not take a huge discount in the process I would like to know more.

Also, what is the exchange rate in Argentina today if you walk into a Cambio and exchange AR pesos for US dollars?

Tom its anywhere from 10 to 20 centavos more than what the listed official dollar is. so right now Aug. 6, the official exchange rate is 15.077 so you'd need about AR$76,000 to get US$5000

Great question Tom, and i don't think macri is happy about dollars leaving argentina, right now it's all about bringing greens into argentine banks so he can launch biggest in history nation-wide infrastructure project, so let me know if you do figure out how to wire larger sums out of here without paying arm and a leg and your local bank.

expatOtree,

Thanks but if I understand your figures I still need to get the US$5,000 to the US. How do I do that other than bring it back with me?

Tom,

I don't know anyone who brought stacks of cash back to USA. Although i hear some people buy 7 year arg bonds and then get their 2% on top of the original dollar amount at maturity date, Volture funds in the US and elsewhere got their money back so why wouldn't you?

Bitcoin could work but people say it's too volatile to mess with, and then maybe paypal?

If you knew a banker who could funnel pesos-dollars to overseas account and then bounce it back to your US account that could work, it has in the past, except that Macri is now the real Jeffe of AFIP and so may not allow these things to go any longer.

Personally i would probably just invest pesos in appreciating asset here in Argentina and then wait until Argentine government liberates its financial markets and lets free flow of currencies in and out, sort of how it is in Uruguay right now.

expat0tree,

The only appreciating asset I have seen over the last seven years in Argentina has been my vineyard worker's wages, from AR 1400 pesos monthly in 2008 to over AR 9,000 pesos per month this year.
