Apartment in Mendoza - Lujan de Cuyo

Hello!

I am looking for a place to stay from Januar to June 2017 while participating in the wine harvest.

The area should be Lujan de Cuyo.

It could either be a 1 or 2 bedroom or even just an extra room in a shared apartment/house.

Preferably furnished but less will do as well :)

My name Niels (37) and I am originally from Denmark. I quit my job last year and have been traveling around the world since October 2015.

Niels,

Considering the Argentine white grape harvest can be in late February to mid March and only last a week and the red grape harvest is in late March and most likely up to mid April and only lasts a week, I wouldn't base my location for 6 months on such a small fraction of time. The city of Mendoza might be best for you or San Rafael.

Hej Niels,

Hi Niels,

Are you bringing the money needed for your stay?

During the grape harvest, working hard and being an experienced harvester, you may be able to earn one or two weeks of rent.

As TomP writes. Mendoza - or possibly San Rafael - be better choices than Lujan.

xvognsen,

Are you looking to harvest grapes purely for the experience or do you want to put a few AR pesos in your pocket?

Do you even know what you will be paid to harvest grapes? Last year harvest workers received about AR 1.2 pesos per kilo and 2017 will be about AR 1.4 pesos per kilo.

If you are strong and fast you can make quite a few pesos in a very short time, e.g. a few days.

Unfortunately where you will find the best and most affordable "apartments" will be in Mendoza City but Mendoza City doesn't really have any vineyards except at the airport. You would have to travel north to San Juan or south to Maipu or Lujan de Cuyo. This means you will spend a lot of time on a bus or money on cabs. Valle de Uco would be worse because it is quite sparse and remote. Vista Flores can be a long ways from any major vineyards which raises the question of will any of these vineyards hire and inexperienced harvest worker?

You need to do some homework.

Good luck.

Sincerely,

Tom Phelan

Thanks Tom

I have a few contacts in Lujan de Cuyo. My plan is to do it on a voluntary basis and it is just for the experience! I am aware of where the different vineyards are located and hope that I will be able to find something in Lujan. I will be visiting Mendoza in a month from and hopefully be able to sort out some kind of arrangement.

Thanks for your advice.

Niels

Niels.

A fellow named J0hn Hill does workaway in San Rafael and could accommodate you if you are willing to help around his tomato farm. John is an ex Rhodesian and runs a farm there and could possibly take you in. The harvest in San Rafael is more local than in the area to the north but much slower and provincial. Both Tom and I have vineyards in the area and use help (free) during the harvest. Send him an email at johnhill1985@gmail.com if you are interested.
