Hi All, what is a good Argentine store at which to buy gift vouchers for professional people? I run a small European tech company and am looking for a good Christmas gift for our one team member based, in Argentina. Would gift vouchers be a good idea? Are there national department stores or popular online retailers that would be suitable for such a gift? I would need to buy the vouchers remotely, preferably online. Thanks!

Might it be worth us asking what sort of gifts you give to your home based staff to get a feel for what sort of item and what sort of value you have in mind? I'm not familiar with store vouchers here: I imagine them to be unpopular because high inflation knocks down their purchasing power from day one. An ordinary gift of cash would be seen in very much the same way as if it were given in Europe - but a gift of cash in fresh, clean United States dollars is usually very well received. The USD isn't seen so much as cash as one of the building blocks of people's lives.

Thanks elhombresinnombre. I had in mind a voucher for a store with a very broad range of stock, similar to Amazon or Sears in the US. The value would be over $100. Giving cash (USD) can send the wrong message I feel - it could be interpreted as top-up pay or a bonus, but what I'm looking for is an unambiguous gift. If gift vouchers are not conventional in Argentina, then could you recommend a large online store for sending gifts via home delivery? That might work as an alternative method for sending a gift directly. Thanks!

A normal gift for end of the year is a case of wine. You can have it delivered and can send less or more expensive wines.

just hand them a grilled morcilla on white bread and cheaply printed happy new year card, plus some candy for kids and done deal.

Interesting suggestions guys, but how do you propose that I get these things to my staff, given that I'm.in Germany and they're near Buenos Aires? One of the benefits of gift vouchers is that they can be purchased and gifted remotely, then used locally.

I may be a late comer but if you are going to buy wine what kind of wine and what quality of wine are you going to buy?
Mendoza Province alone has 1,400 Bodegas and I am sure each one will extoll the virtue of buying its wine. For a price many will ship the wine especially if to addresses in or near B.A.

I won't comment on the voucher issue. But my experience in Argentina is that the traditional holiday gift for employees is a basket of goodies. It may include a bottle of wine, cider or "champan," seasonal cakes and pastries, other special food items such as jams or cheese or sausages, and holiday candies such as turron. You can create your own basket, or buy one of the many already put together and are widely available in supermarkets, bakeries, gift shops, candy stores, etc. at a range of prices.

You can have wine ordered and delivered with online instructions. If you need any recommendations I can offer you some coming directly from the winery if you wish. If you wish to do it with online retailers I am sure you can get reasonable deals too.

While it is true you can order wine via the Internet or through Wine Clubs this does not in itself insure you are purchasing a great Argentine wine. This much I can assure you, one will not find a great Argentine wine for USA$10 - US$20 a bottle.

Hi Tom: I am wondering what labels of mid-price wines you would recommend. I typically buy satisfactory wines in the local chinese supermercado for about 125 pesos, although there are many labels priced less than 100 pesos for 750 mL. Of course, I rarely see any of these labels in the USA - though sometimes Norton or Trapiche, but never Lattitude 33. Thanks for any recommendations you care to make.

I would highly recommend Pulenta Brother's Cabernet Franc, it's a fantastic wine but even if Argentina prices at about 600 pesos.
I would also recommend any of the wines from Clos de Siete's five world class Bodegas and of course "Camilo's" Malbec from Bodega Bombal y Aldao in San Rafael that was served to President Obama when visiting Presidente Macri.

Can you recommend a company which takes orders online for such baskets and delivers them nationwide? Thanks!

I did not do an intensive search of the site, but I think you can get what you need at Mercado Libre. This item came up quickly when I searced "cesto de navidad." http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-612699765-m36-mini-canasta-o-cesta-en-mimbre-regalo-mama-o-navidad-_JM
