" I''m a New Zealander and have lived 3 times in Australia. I moved to the USA and married an American. We would one day like to move to Australia permanently. I have no problem living there without a visa but it won''t be automatic for him. Has anyone been through this process and can tell me what is involved (you can get tied up in knots trying to read the red tape). Also how costly was the transition, replacing all electrical appliances. Thanks "

" Hiya, just wanted to help if I can. My hubby & I went through the same thing, only I''m the Yank & he''s the Aussie. Your husband won''t be able to work (legally), won''t be able to have Medicare health cover, & won''t be able to enter Australia on a one way plane ticket unless he applies for residency through DIMA (Dept. of Immigration & Multicultural Affairs). Check out DIMA''s web site for a lot of info. He may have to apply for NZ residency before he''s elidgible of it in Australia. The only drawback to applying for residency is it''s really expensive. The application fee is about $1,500 AUS. He will also need a comprehensive medical exam which was quite expensive for me. As for electrical appliance conversion, I couldn''t tell you. The price of buying new or used appliances IN Australia is quite similar to than in the US. Hope this helps, Jen "

" Jen, Read your posting... and my fiance and I are trying to determine where we''ll live... he''s Australian, I''m American. I read something recently that said it''s ""easier"" to get a visa if you''re married rather than a fiance (to get Australian residency). Have you heard this? Also, how long did your visa take to be approved, how long before you could work, etc.? Any other points of interest you discovered would be helpful! Autumn "
