" YOu''d need to speak to someone who has lived in both countries to answer this question. I''m Australian and lived in SG for 4.5 years. The first year or so was pretty hard to adjust to but looking back on my whole experience, IT WAS THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE! You have to understand first of all that you''re in Singapore. NOT AUSTRALIA. Things are different so don''t whinge abt it coz you wouldnt like some foreigner bitching and moaning abt Oz. I''m quite sick of listening to aussies talk abt how it is back home and how it''s so different. Well tough! GO HOME THEN. 1)People don''t understand you coz of yr accent so speak slowly. Everyone speaks English but it''s hard to get used to the singaporean accent. BE PATIENT They also add words in that make it Singlish. They add ''La'' at the end of every sentence. 2) People do not take initiative. esp in the workplace. SPECIFY EVERYTHING and do no assume that they''d know coz they don''t. A lot of singaporeans are like blocks of wood. Creativity has not been encouraged for years. This is a country that banned buskers. But i think the gov now knows that Singapore has now lost its soul and is scrambling to get it back. They now have buskers but thye have to go for an audition before getting their busker licence. 3) do not do anything illegal if you value yr life. Dont smoke marijuana or take drugs. They are not kidding around when they say they''ll execute you. 4)Singaporeans know that they need expats to learn new skills from. However it''s a love hate relationship with foreigners. they need you but they may not like you. 5) if you are male. please do not go out with an SPG. (sarong party girl). Tanned girls, usually wearing really skimpy outfits. They''re out to get yr money or get a ticket outta there. Most of them aren''t singaporean/chinese girls though. But you''ll see them and most expat males fall prey to them within the first year of living in singapore. 6) the tax rates are heaps better than Oz. 7) expect to pay $10 for a mug beer and it''s not going to be a great beer. Don''t bitch abt it. it''s the way it is. However i suggest you buy pitchers. they work out cheaper. 8) Expect to pay double or more for ''western'' food. ie your yummy cheeses, salmon, MILK (when i left in 1999 it was $2.50 for a litre) etc. You can save money by eating in hawker centres but it''s not recommended to do it everyday coz it''s oily. 9) Shopping is great esp electronics. 10) rent is expensive. it''s 2-3k for a decent apartment. I''d suggest you negotiate a VERY GOOD expat package with yr company coz it will make a dent in your pocket. Everything is small. 20% of the population live in a private apartment or house. the rest live in goverenment flats. they''re not the most pleasant nor most convenient. Many companies are willing to negotiate a package that will include some allowances for rent, transport etc. my friend even asked for a beer allowance and believe or not he got it. But that''s not the norm... 11) if you like aussie rules footy. there''s a footy club there. ther''s heaps of aussies there 12) If you can find some expat friends they will be most willing to show you around. All expats are pretty friendly and i used to meet people every single day. 13) Night clubs are expensive and they charge more for guys. Expect to pay $25 for cover. I guess the best thing to remember that although things can be infuriating Just remmeber that you''re in different country and you''re not there to recreate australia. a lot of expats try to recreate things and end up miserable. You''re grownups you can adapt. The food is fantastic so try everything. email me if you need more info. cheryl "
