" I highly recommend Melbouorne. it is an internationally known city with a GREAT multi-cultural atmosphere. As for expense I would fly, as Virgin Blue has some great deals round trip between Sydney and Melbourne aprox $66 AUD. go on line to look up the city there are MANY references. Good Luck and have fun... Ken "

" If you haven''t already made a decision, Brisbane/Gold Coast this time of year might be a more pleasant place to visit. Melbourne would be better for indoor activities, Brisbane much better for outdoors. Less smog, less traffic, lower prices, better scenery (subtropical and green year round), rainforested mountains and waterfalls 45 mins from the CBD, top ranked beaches an hour to the north and south, etc. Similarly cheap flights Sydney-Brisbane, but the 600 mile Pacific highway is a pleasant drive that can be done in a long day. Much more of an outdoors oriented place- cafes, concerts, markets etc. all year round. Winters are sunny and 20degC every day. "

" Hi Eunie... Definitely Melbourne!!!! The atmosphere is just fabulous. The people are easy going and modern. Brisbane is ok, if you like the beach and all, but Melbourne also has great beaches to go to. Brisbane is rather the quiet (sorry to say) boring type. You should rent a car and drive down from Sydney. You can stop over in many small cities along the way. Must see in Melbourne: Oxford street and china town for delicious food. Cheers and have a ENJOY!!! "

" Yes, there are some beautiful ocean beaches an hour out of Melbourne, but make sure you bundle up, or wear a full 5mm wetsuit if you care to venture into the water! As a city, Brisbane has a beautiful riverfront setting, and 700'' Mt Coot-tha right behind it- perfect for lunch outdoors with a view- lush green hills everywhere, and you can''t get any more easy-going than Queenslanders! Try the excellent and inexpensive outdoor cafes of West End, then walk for miles on the pleasant footpaths that line the clean and curving riverfront. But the real joy I think is in the variety of scenery in the numerous national parks close by- short or long trails with waterfalls, flocks of parrots, and subtropical rainforests. See the harbour in Sydney, get out and go to Melbourne, get a great meal, but then save the best for last and escape the cold drizzle and fog and come up to sunny Queensland- it''s closer to the laid-back outdoor lifestyle Australia is famous for.
