" Hi, I''m a 36 year old Canadian citizen living and working in Toronto. I''m planning to leave the company I''ve been with for the last several years and I''ve decided I''d like to spend a year living in Sydney. I''d like to be able to work while I''m there to offset my living expenses. My question is regarding finding a job, specifically, I''m wondering how to go about it. I e-mailed a personnel company in Sydney last week but I haven''t had any response. Is it possible to go to Australia on a tourist visa and then apply for a temporary work permit ? (assuming of course that I''d be able to find a company to hire me). I recall reading recently that you can''t apply for a temp work visa while you''re in the country (is there any way around that ?). I don''t have any particular line of work in mind, the purpose of the move is just to experience Sydney for a year. I don''t know how I would go about finding a job without being able to search and interview in person. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ! Patrick "

" Dear Patrick Here is what I would suggest: Take a look at the Commonwealth Department of Immigration website - www.immi.gov.au. I suggest you look specifically at a Temporary Work Visa. It might also be of benefit to speak to the Australian High Commission in Ottawa www.ahc-ottawa.org. This site has very user-friendly information. Another possibility is a Student Visa (which allows you to work to a limited extent). In any event, feel free to keep in touch about all this. It is best to email me direct at vendeedom@hotmail.com. Sydney is indeed a wonderful City! Canadians are especially welcome. Kind Regards Dominic "
