" Hi. I''ve just recently moved to Sydney from the states to marry an Aussie. When I visited, I loved it. But, moving is something different altogether. I am homesick as anything and I would welcome contact from anyone who has ""been there"" or anyone who is as new to the area as me. Thanks. "

" Hi Anne, Welcome to expat life. It can be very rewarding but very lonely if not approached the right way. having been an expat for over 3 years now, I have learnt somethings that might help you. First of all join your local American Chamber of Commerce, they will have information about business mixers wher you are able to mix with your own people, anothe good source of information is your local International Womens Group, the aMCHAM will have more info on this for you. You can always contact the IWP in Prague to get their address as well. www.iwp.cz I think is the address. Good luck, do not give up!!!!! I didn''t, and it was the best move I ever made. If you get the blues, smile, it helps....... honest. "

" Hi Anne, I am moving to Sydney the 24th of September. For me being Dutch living with an englishman I know a bit about your situation. We have lived in several countries now but we are trying to create a home in Sydney. I have also learned to see things in a possitive way, my partner does not speak any dutch so I always have to communicate in english. Perhaps we can meet sometime. Share some of the Sydney information, join an international womens groups etc. Sydney is also new to me. Good luck and remember.... home is where the heart is. Marlous Hamming "

" Hi Marlous. Thanks for writing. I''d like to hook up with you once you get settled out here. It''s only recently that it''s gotten really hard. I came out here from the states and had to plan for our wedding in June (my husband is an Aussie). So, that took up almost all my time. It''s only since we''ve gotten married that it''s sunken in that I''m here for good. I obviously made the decision to come here for a reason, but now I need to find ways to try and acclimate myself. Sounds like you''re a ""pro"" so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Anne "

" Hi Anne, I can imagine how difficult it must have been or still is to adapt to a new country. Thought speaking the same language Australia is still far away. Like they say..When in Rome do as the Romans do. I on the other hand am looking very much forward to move to Sydney, also knowing it will not always be that easy. Thank god there is internet! But it is true you have to create a new social life, new job etc etc. It is like you said so different than a holiday. Try to see the bright sight of it all you know what you left behind, real friends stay friends and you will meet new people with new interests. And there is a complete new challenge out there a wonderfull city to discover, not many people are that lucky. I also have to leave my beloved ones at home here in Holland so Yes, i know the feeling and it is good to know I am not the only one out there in Sydney. Though getting enough support from my partner it is also nice to create your own life. I will give you my e-mail number so you can stay in touch marloush@hotmail.com Take care, Marlous "

" Hi Anne, I know it''s been a few months since you posted, but I just found this website. I am an American who moved to Sydney (married an Australian too!). I have been here three years and understand exactly where you are coming from. I am personally finding it very hard since the attacks. Email me - I have lots of advice and words of support for you. (Although I still haven''t found a way to smuggle Ben and Jerrys in..) My husband and I are actually moving to the US this year- I am still homesick! :) Take care, Debbie "

" Hi Debbie- Thanks for writing. Things have gotten better (in terms of homesickness) but I can relate to your feelings since the attacks on the 11th. Write me back directly to my email. Maybe we can get together. Would be good to talk to a fellow American! Take care, Anne "

" Hi Debbie & Anne, I''m going to be moving to Sydney within the next year with my Australian husband and our two kids. I''m having a real hard time with it. Any suggestions on how to psych myself into this? Debbie, how did you manage to convince your husband to move back to the US? We don''t actually live there, we met internationally and still live there. I''d really like to hear from you. Lee "

" Hi Lee- I moved here to Sydney because my husband is Australian. With many different factors involved, it proved to be the ""easiest"" way to go - me coming here. I wasn''t quite sure, you''re currently in the States and your husband is Australian? What excited me was knowing that I''d be with my now husband (we got married after I got here). Also just the fact that I''d be in a foreign country was exciting. Americans as a general ""rule"" don''t travel because most only get 2 weeks of vacation if that much. But, since I''ve been here, I''ve met so many people from all over the world, it''s incredible. I think in my post that I wrote, I was at my lowest, most homesick period. I no longer hate my surroundings, but rather really relish and appreciate the differences, day to day and culturally. I do get homesick, but more for people rather than ways of life and things I grew up with and knew my whole life. A great book to read, that talks about preparations for int''l move is: Culture Shock, A wife''s Guide by Robin Pascoe. It talks about pre-move jitters, if you have kids how to prep them and what to do once you get to where you''re going. I would highly recommend it. She writes with lots of firsthand experience. Even with all my excitement, I''ve been where you''ve been, to some extent. Please write me at my email if you want. Good luck. Take care. Anne "

" Anne, Still didn''t see your email. Thanks for that. Our situation is a little difficult. I''m actually Australian too but haven''t lived there for close on 30 years. My husband, who left 15 years ago but as an adult, can''t understand why it doesn''t feel like home to me. After all that''s what my passport is. We met while we were both working overseas and now that we have children we need to be somewhere to start them in school. I''m really trying to make the best of it but it''s just the feeling that once I get there I''ll never get out again. My family and closest friends are all in the US and Canada. Where are you living? Lee "

" Hi Lee- That is a bit of a different situation. I can appreciate your frustration. I''m actually in Sydney. I think that''s where you said you were moving to? Here''s my email: annio63@hotmail.com Is it set in stone that you''re moving to Australia? Or is it only a maybe? Either way, you just need to let your husband know why you''re so anxious about moving. Tell him what you wrote. I think that having support of your partner with whatever you''re feeling will definitely help some of the frustration. Write me back. Let me know how you''re doing. Have you checked that book out? I def recommend it. Talk to you soon. Anne "

" Things are coming along fine now. I''ve settled in to the daily life, the routine and the difference in cultures. People think that because of the similarities, our origins from Britain that it''s not that different but it is. Pros are living abroad in a beautiful country with an exposure to other sub-cultures you don''t have in the States; a relaxed way of life; great work-life balance. Cons are obvious: homesickness for ""things"" you grew up with and know; family; home country. What makes you want to move? Work? It''s a long process for visa approval. Something to keep in mind if you have a time frame in mind. Take care. Anne "
