did you move to melbourne yet? I just got an offer an the salaries are WAY less than the US. Is it true that the cost of living is about half of that of the US?

I'm Dutch (but live in London) and I've been trying to obtain a work visa for Australia for a year now as I'd like to live in Melbourne, but no luck yet as my job is not on their Skilled Jobs list. How did you get an offer? Is your job so in demand or did you just write to loads and loads of companies?

I've just moved back to New Hampshire after living for the past 10 years in Melbourne. It's a wonderful place to live and wouldn't have traded the past 10 years for anything, but it's also great to be back. If you have any questions feel free to write me.

The cost of living is probably twice as high in Melbourne then many U.S. cities. And yes your are right the salaries are lower.

You said twice as expensive to live in Melbourne? Ouch. Other commentators have said it is 1/2 as expensive to live in Australia. Please confirm. Where did you live in Melbourne? We are looking at the Frankston/Mt. Eliza/Mornington area. How would this compare to whre you lived? Boston?

Hi Paula.
I read your message about moving to Australia. I am czech and my boyfriend is dutch. We both live in Prague, Czech rep. He studied in Australia for a year, in Geelong close to Melbourne and he would love to move there. I heard its very difficult in these days to move there in contrary to the past when many eastern european people moved there. Many young people go there for studies.. 1 year languages courses and then they are allowed to work part time. I am afraid though that they have to return after that period. It is a good start though to get to know people there and see around for possibilities. Unfortunatelly the courses are pretty expensive but since you get working permit then you can pay it back. At least that is what I understood. I would like to get to know more about Australia since we will perhaps live there in the future. It will be hard to leave Europe though I heard that Australia is great.
Good luck for you, hope you succeed :)

I'm moving to Melbourne next January. I'm a single girl (27) and am going to be looking for a centrally located/pleasant and or funky area in which to live... Any suggestions? And how hard is it to find decent work down there? I have dual citizenship so papers aren't a problem... I'm also concerned about the cost of living/wage issue.... Everyone seems to contradict each other! Any estimates as to what an administrative assistant would earn on average?

Hi,

I would suggest areas close to the city as best for someone wanting to enjoy the single life. Albert Park is a nice area, but expensive. Brunswick, Fitzroy, Clifton Hill, Carlton all offer easy access to the city and varying prices in rental accommodation. You should not have any problems finding work as an admin assistant, there are plenty of jobs around as long as you know a few MS packages. Salaries for an admin assistant can be anything from $28,000 to $45,000 AUD. The highest salary would probably be working in the field of law.

We are moving back to Melbourne after living in Norway for a few years so the prices in Melbourne seem cheap to us. Really, the prices are not that high, but the wages are less than in the USA. However, I think the middle class standard of living is comparable. If you earned say $30000 AUD you would probably want to share an apartment with someone, as renting in the inner city area can set you back around $250 to $300 AUD per week.

Good luck! Keep this site (www.newcomersnetwork.com.au) in mind if you do move to Melbourne, it has some useful information.

Kat.

Many rental listings also have pictures.

I don't know why you'd want to live in Melbourne, its cold and can get all four seasons in the one day. They say that there are only two good things about Melbourne, the beer and the road out (Sydney Road). But then I live in Darwin so what would I know.
