Cost of living in Canberra

Hi all,

I posted this to misc.immigration.australia. Sorry for the cross-posting.

I've been offered a scholarship to the ANU. I would like to know what my standard of living will be in "real" terms. You can help me by listing typical prices for the following "basket" of goods:

a gallon of gas
a lb (or kg) of fresh fruits or vegetables
a month's rent for an austere 2 bedroom apartment
a month of local phone service
a latte (yes, really)

What I'm wondering about is not just the exchange rate, but the "real" cost of living. I imagine that anything imported is probably costly.

What are local commercial interest rates for a typical savings account? What about commercial lending rates, are they generally higher or lower than the U.S.?

Are medical costs generally higher or lower than the U.S.? I expect my student health cover to barely manage. If my health cover provides 85% of the cost of a prescription, I want some idea of what that 15% is going to be. I will generally be living outside of Australia's social safety net.

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide. Please be as specific as possible.

Regards,

Theresa Krebs

a gallon of gas -- avg 85-95 cents per litre
a lb (or kg) of fresh fruits or vegetables - not bad
a month's rent for an austere 2 bedroom apartment--very expensive
a month of local phone service- not bad
a latte (yes, really)-- 3-5 dollars aussie

Go ANU! I studied at the ANU for part of my undergrad. I loved living in Canberra. I thought it was much cheaper than Melbourne or Sydney. I don't know much about interest rates, but in terms of day to day living expenses, I can tell you about that.

When I was there (mid to end of 2003) the prices were:

liter of petrol: somewhere around 85-95 cents (A$) per liter
kilo of fruit: I dont' remember for sure, but it was cheaper than in the states, depending on what you want
apartment: my friends pay around $100 ($AU) a week for a decent sized apartment
phone rate: not too bad, but you have to pay a connection fee for every call (had to get used to as an american..also, for long distance, you pay according to how far away you are calling even if it is the same area code)
a latte: at Cafe Essen (best coffee shop in caberra), i think a plain latte was around $AU 3-4 (not bad at all)

Enjoy Canberra! I know I did!
