We are hoping to emigrate to australia from england and are unsure of where to re-locate to. My partner works as a printer and we have a 1 year old son, we would love to live near the beach. Any advice???

Funny that; wanting to live by the beach. We've as much space as the US, and yet there's only 19 million of us... and nearly all of us live within 50 miles of the coast, and about 85% of us live in the major capital cities - Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Speaking as someone who came to Sydney from Liverpool 6 years ago, any one of these cities would make an excellent home. Melbourne is the coolest and probably the most 'European'. Brisbane is the warmest and most laid back. Sydney is the liveliest, the most beautiful, but also the most expensive. Perth is very popular with migrants from the UK and South Africa. It's a long way from everywhere else - its best point and its biggest drawback! The dept of immigration is trying to persuade people to migrate to cities other than Sydney, so you might find it easier to get your application accepted if you aim for somewhere like Brisbane or Adelaide. Their house prices are probably about 30% cheaper than Sydney (and I reckon Sydney's on a par with Manchester as far as median house prices are concerned). What are your main interests?

Thanks for your reply. Paul my partner is a printer by trade and a very keen runner, we both love the outdoors and hate the cold winters in England. We have never been to Australia before but we have heard cairns is very nice although I am not sure if this is more of a tourist area?
Do you miss much about England??

Hi Susien We are in the process of hopefully getting our visa. We have 2 kids aged 8 & 10 and my hubby is a ceramic tiler. We went to Oz Jan 2000 for a month to check it out as I needed to see it before I made my decision, With the kids to think about. I was well impressed it is definately where I want my kids to grow up. We went to Brisbane area it was beautiful, definately need to be near the sea can't be doin' with cities. Need to chill thats wot it's all about. Have you applied for your visa. Be nice to keep in touch and follow each others progress. Our e-mail is g.oose@virgin.net look forward to hearing from you Jackie & Mike

Hi Jackie and Mike,
Thanks for your reply. We have applied through a migration bureau and at the moment we have just been told that pauls TRA application was successful and that we are now being sent the main application, have not received that yet so don't have a clue what that involves. How far have you got with your application and are you using a migration bureau or have you sorted it all yourselves?.
We have now sold our house so I hope we do get to go. Has mike been offered a job in brisbane or are you just hoping to find work when you there??
Hope you keep in touch and good luck.

Hi Susien We sent our TRA off 3 wks ago so are eagerly waiting an answer. They said it will take 4 - 6 wks, ours has been a nightmare as Mikes job is not a recognised trade, so we have had to get loads of references and documents etc which has been very long winded. But the ball is rolling now..... We have gone through an agency, it seemed a safe bet. No we haven't got a job lined up, but when we went there was lots of tile shops and I would imagine there will be quite a big call for it over there. Where abouts are you thinking of going. Jackie

Hi Jackie,
We had to get loads of references for the TRA and have them all signed by a solicitor, there seems to be so much to sort out. I don't know where is australia we will locate to if we get to go, when we saw the BBC2 programme 'Get a new life' where a couple emigrated to Brisbane I did'nt think it looked that nice. It's hard to pick somewhere when you have never been before.
I think one of the things that worries me most is missing my family. I have a one year old son and he is my mum's only grandchild. I just hope it will all be worth it!

Hi again Susien We didn't see the prog about moving to Brisbane but wish we had I must have missed that one. I know exactly what you mean about leaving family, I felt the same but I think when you look at the over all picture you have to be tough and think of number 1. I felt bad about taking the kids away and also leaving family behind. I said no when Mike first suggested it. But when you start doing your homework and looking in to it there are a lot of pluses. I definately think the kids will be better over there it offeres a lot more than this place. We went for a month in Jan 2002 so I could make a definate decision as we had to consider the kids and within a few days I knew it was worth going. ( and Im not the easiest of people to convince ) It's so clean and big and not cluttered up like here. Apparently the schools are much better. We went all round the Brisbane area to get a proper idea of the place and we realy liked the sunshine coast. I wouldn't move into a city anywhere. Mooloolaba and Noosa were lovely I just hope that there is work in that area. If we get in we will definately rent to begin with until we know we are in the right area. I dont think you can realy know until you try. But there's nothing compares to walking down one of the beaches with your feet in the water, The air also seems a lot cleaner & fresher. It might be easier to mail direct to g.oose@virgin.net TTFN Jackie

Hi Jackie,
Thanks for yoy reply. We have just received our main application form from the emiration bureau we are using and just when I thought the worst was over with the TRA form, its so complicated and we have 10 days to get everything together as paul is 35 in July and we will drop below the required amount of points so I totally stressed out at the moment. My mum went to Noosa when she travelled around australia and she said it was lovely. Will e-mail soon. My e-mail address is susannolloth@talk21.com
