Will you be applying in Australia or outide Au? I applied for mine in Australia. It takes a little over 2 years. You complete all the preliminary paperwork/applications/health checks - they review and if they approve, they will issue the spouse with a temporary resident's visa. Then you have to wait a minimum of 2 years from the date you apply/approved (it was almost exactly that for me) and then they will send you a notice to submit additional info/proof of continuing relationship; they;ll review, then approved w/i about 6 weeks for mine. If you want more information - you can send me an email: chris_gatelyoz@yahoo.com.au

Cheers,
Chris

I applied for my spouse visa through the Australia House in London, UK. They stated that it should take 6 to 8 months depending on background checks. I had to get a UK and USA check done. It took about 5 months to be ready, but I got caught in a catch 22 situation (I was active duty with US Navy) and didn't have it issue until the 10 month point. Depending on how long you have been together will affect the relationship test. In our case it was pretty much a no brainer as we have been married for 20 years and had two kids.

Good Luck!
