We are moving to Melbourne next month! We are looking for advice on neighborhoods/suburbs to settle in that offer nice parks, shopping, schools (we have a 6 year old) and reasonable commute to the CBD. A place that willl be welcoming to 3 confused Yanks from the SF Bay Area most welcome!

Hi there,
I'm a 50+ Yank from the Indiana, who has lived in Melbourne area since 1997.
I live in a suburb called Sandringham, that I can recommend it very highly for all of the things you mentioned. There are other suburbs close by that are very good, also.
It is just like in the states, it depends on how much you have to spend.
I would be happy to help you.
I've not used this sort of forum before so I am not sure of the procedurers.

I am from Denver and my wife is from Melbourne. We are also moving to Melbourne in July. I have lived there before for 6 months and got to know the area somewhat. The great thing about Melbourne is it has a GREAT train system all over the city. Although people love their cars there too!

Essendon - has nice older homes and is the current HOT spot for living - Good schools and the City is about a 15 min. train ride and 20 minute drive.

Kew - Upscale homes and schools (nice Golf courses and close to city). I used to work in Kew and loved the area but out of our price range).

Ascotvale - Next suburb over from Essendon. Same except a little cheaper homes ($250,000 to $350,000)

Toorak - Upscale living about 10 min. Train to City. Good private schools.

Marybonong (Spelling questionable) - Nice area next to a river and close to major shopping mall

South Melbourne - Right next to the beach. More trendy - not sure about schools. Still close to city.

That's about all I remember. Hope this is a good start.

We may be moving to Melbourne in first quarter of 2004. I'm curious about moving with pets, do you know anything about quarantine periods?
