I'm an Australian citizen, born in Perth, planning to relocate to Adelaide in 2004 with my wife & daughter (US citizens). I left Australia when I was 2, so know very little about it, but nonetheless Australia is pulling me back to my roots! My plan is to work part time and enroll full time at university in either Adelaide or Perth.

I'd like your feedback on the following:
1. what steps folks have taken in funding and completing their own relocations from US to Australia

2. what relocation costs others have incurred

3. what steps others took to find employment in Australia. My current profession is in microelectronics and optoelectronics component design.

4. a good source of info for cost of living comparisons

5. the best place to drink a beer in Adelaide and/or Perth

Cheers! - Ralph

I'm also a fellow Perthie who's been living in California for 7 years. My husband is a native Californian, but he's itching to move to Perth for a change of pace and a better place to raise a family, when the time comes. I'm luke warm on the idea, as I LOVE California, but will do it for him.

We have just started checking out moving costs and like the sound of packing our own container. We're hoping to get our stuff shipped for $2-3K US if we pack it ourselves. Much more than that and we might be better off selling our things, save the shipping fees and taking just our personal things with us on the flight.

For cost of living in Perth, check out www.aussiemove.com - it shows the cost for a family of four - which sounds like you.

Regarding work, while I am in the tech industry, I don't expect to find that kind of work in Perth. I'm hoping to transfer my skills into the oil/gas/mining industry which is very big in Perth. My husband wants to dive further into the wine industry.

You mention study - education is WAY cheaper in Aust. than the US, so both of us also would like to go back and get those graduate degrees we could never afford in the US.

Let us know how your plans are shaping up and whether you pick Perth as your destination.

Lou

i am also an Oz trying to relocate my family after 17 years overseas. I am from sydney and know that it is completely out of my price range. We are thinking of adelaide, can anyone tell me about adelaide other than tourist info.
Is it windy?
How is the public transportation?
Can we live near the beach and work in the city? and if so what suburbs?
Does Adelaide feel far away?
We have lived in europe and the US- loved europe disliked lifestyle in the US.
Any info would be great.
This is my final move so i just want to get it right.
