Eastern suburbs are the best for families ... that's where we are (3 yrs in Melb from Silicon Valley). Although there are trains, buses and trams in Melb, you CANNOT get anywhere with a family without a car. Public transport schedules are woeful over the weekend and outside peak hours.

Real estate: try North Balwyn ($600K+), Doncaster ($470K+), Templestowe ($500K+) for suburban blocks. For more acreage (and thus a bit further out), try Donvale ($600K+) and Park Orchards ($600K+).

Try www.theage.com.au for an electronic version of one of the Melb newspapers.

If you're from the UK (and white), you should have no probs finding friends ... it's just everyone else they dislike.

I emigrated with my family from England to Melbourne and lived there for twenty years. I am currently living in the US, planning to return to Melbourne later this year.

I would like to comment on the statement "they dislike everyone else"...

I have travelled to many places in the world and have found Melbourne to be one of the most diverse and accepting of all. Unfortunately there are intolerant people everywhere, and you will find some in Australia, but it sounds as though you are accusing all Australians of being unfriendly to non-whites (at best), or racist at worst! This is offensive and untrue.

I think the public transporation is quite good in most Melbourne suburbs. I caught public transport to work in Melbourne for years, and I lived over 60km from the city. You can get virtually anywhere on the train.

There are also trams if you are closer to the city, and buses of course.
