Declaring currency

What is the deal with entering the country with your savings? I looked up the Australian Customs Service website and it says that you need to declare any amount over Aus $10,000. Why do we need to do that? Will it be taxed again in Australia? We are thinking that we will just send checks over to my wife's Aussie bank account before we travel, is that a legit way to do it?

Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Angusdad,

This would only apply if you are planning to show up at the airport with over $10K cash in your suitcases! :) There would definitely be some duties and taxes for bringing in so much currency.

I really don't recommend sending over checks (cheques), as most banks will charge a hefty fee to process and take at least 20 days to clear. For transferring a large amount of money, I'd go with a currency exchange service like OzForEx or Xe as they can give you the best rates with minimum transaction fees.

Or, another option is to leave your money at "home" and just withdraw it from the ATM as you need it. Even with the fees, it can be much cheaper in the long run.

Hi

The reason you have to declare the currency, is to stop money laundering etc.

You will not be charged taxes etc, but you will have to prove it is yours (bank statement, letter, wage slip etc). You will have to complete a Declaration form (green form).

I regularly come back home to Australia, with over $30,00 cash (no local bank account at the time). It is not a problem, but you must declare it or risk being not only fined, but then detained and possibly refused entry into Australia.

If your wife has a AUS bank account, just transfer the money online, or via telegraphic transfer (tt), via your current bank (your will need your wife's bank account details, branch and swift code).

She should also advise her Branch Manager (phone call or fax), that she is authorising the transfers to be accepted into her account.

I hope this helps.
