moving back with my u.s. husband

I am an Australian citizen but I have not been there since I was 3 years old. That was 26 years ago.
I am assuming that there will be no problems for me to move back with my u.s. husband.
I have asked the immigrations office and they can not give me an answer and advised me to just go ahead and apply for a visa for him.
We are thinking about moving to Darwin. Can anyone give me some info about that city. No one in this forum seems to want to move there. Why?
We both want to work and go to school there.

Thanks

Hi Belinda,

I'm an American who's lived in Darwin for the past 4 years.

If you are an Australian citizen, you should have no problem sponsoring your husband for a spouse visa. That's the easy part. :)

Now, about Daaah-win. The reason most people don't choose to move to a place like Darwin is because... well... it's not exactly the easiest place to live, for most "normal" people. Only Perth is more isolated; it's closer to Jakarta and Singapore than Sydney and Brisbane. Being situated in the tropics, it is around 90-F every single day of the year, and we have only 2 seasons: wet and dry. Dry is dry heat, wet is humidity hell....and trust me, this is NOTHING like the so-called "humid weather" in some areas of the USA. MUCH worse. *g* The people are nice, but a bit hokey. It's more like a country town than a capital city. Except that we now have the highest/tightest housing market in the nation!!! grrr

Of course, there are LOTS of good things too - certainly are, or I never would've stayed so long. Then again, I ain't exactly "normal". :) So...umm... why do YOU want to move to Darwin? What's the pull? Have you ever visited?

Any other specific questions, let me know!

Hi, and thanks for your explanation.

Actually I don't even remember Australia I was not very old when I moved away from there.
But I have lived in Key West, Florida (hot and humid) and Las Vegas (hot hot and dry). I actually like the heat, the humid kind better then the dry.

You say it is on average 90 degrees in Darwin, wow!!
I allways thought that humid heat evens the field out, everybody is sweaty, no makeup and no one gets their hair "did". And people tend to be more laid back.

Do you think Darwin is too small or is it just perfect?

And if you have been to Perth, is it to much of a big city feel or is it laid back?

I like the seclusion of the two cities.
Darwin seems to be similar to Key West but bigger (and attached to the mainland).

Thanks
